2003 fuel issue possible FCA or injectors thoughts

interesting fuel supply issue

so the scenario started while driving on the highway friday morning early in the cool morning air truck fired up and ran great was getting exceptional mileage. about 4 miles from where i stopped to check things out the interior cab noise from the motor became audibly louder as though the engine was under load or heavily fueling and detonating. no real visible smoke. pulled into a restaurant parking lot to have breakfast and to examine things idled smoothly no cackle or detonation. turned truck off wouldn’t restart. lift pump has solid fuel pressure. fuel was clean. changed fuel filter, bled and tried again no fire. cranks easily but is not fueling. tested rail pressure sensor and had less than .5 of a volt and believe minimum is 1.5 volts.

due to lack of time etc Dropped truck at a shop at this point and set them loose on it, while they were cranking engine over and doing injector bleed down test and checking the fuel return valve (which tested good) the truck fixed itself and fired up.

There were absolutely no codes in the system. at the end a low rail pressure code appeared after it fired back up for the shop. truck runs smoothly.

Ive already ordered new injectors with the amount of miles I’m inclined to slap in the set of new bosch injectors, new supply tubes and a FCA. the truck is now suppling good rail pressure the shop says possibly a little high at idle pressures.

2003 305/555 MT 230k miles been like a swiss watch but even the shop is a little mystified

thoughts?

When my '03 had the FCA fail, it never showed a code. Just at an idle the engine would drop RPM's, rattle like a 12v, and then race up on it's own......and all at random times.....it was never consistent. Sounds like you're on the right track with your parts list for the mileage.

it was the fca, not injectors. you need to add better filtering

The increased engine noise has me puzzled...like maybe your rail pressure sensor was starting to fail, however that should produce a code.

I would not be to quick to replace injectors quite yet. If you unplug your rail pressure sensor while running, will it produce the sound expansion you experienced? And is the code that will show up the same one the shop read?
