2003 Ram 2500 LIFT PUMP? FCA?? broke down!!

New as a member to tis site, hope to give back some of the great info and troubleshooting tips I have gotten.
Now to my problem.. My trucks broke down in Colorado, was on the way here from Dallas.
About 1000 miles ago replaced the lift pump, was running great. Got bad fuel on the way here, was acting like the lift pump again, with 3/4 of a tank of fuel.
So got a 10 ft piece of fuel line and a 5 gal container, yes they call me Mcgiver sometimes!
Anyway, truck ran good for 10 miles, then started bucking ..again, just like before I replaced the lift pump. Pulled over , checked canister, almost empty. Filled it and lines , started off again, started bucking and fuel consumption is now about 1 1/2 mpg. After about 7or 8 miles container is empty, and truck has been bucking the whole time..Any ideas?? need help fast, had to leave it and have to go get it soon..I know you guys will come thru again!

Pull your dipstick, check it for thinness or a diesel smell, and high level. Could be a bad injector that is leaking into the crank case.

Do you have any codes? Do you know how to do the code retrieval method with the key?

Yes loosened the injectors to see if the injector pump was good while it was running, had good spray out, plenty of pressure checked codes had a P0088, but I think that was caused by loosening the injectors.thanks guys, any other suggestions, gonna try it again today..need help, gotta get it back to house, its 145 miles away

Cracking the injector lines is very dangerous on third gens with the high pressure common rail. Pressures can exceed 26k psi, and can injure or kill.

It really sounds like you have an injector that is hanging open because of the excessive fuel consumption.

Did you check the oil level?

Also, look for fuel under the truck. If an injector is hanging and filling the crankcase, it will come out the breather tube and cover the bottom of the truck.

Try unplugging your rail pressure sensor (just behind the intake horn, just before the pressure relief valve), and see if it is corroded, and plug it back in.

The high fuel consumption is still making me think injectors.

had a leak from lift pump , fixed that, still high fuel comsumption, about 1/2 gal when revving engine to 2500 rpms, for about 3 mins..looking like injectors, but it was all of a sudden, . Putting injector cleaner in the fuel..heavy..see if it works, luckily no fuel in the oil, so #1 cylider is ruled out..anything else?? thanks alot.really appreciate it!! ..Jim

So, you're pulling out of a 5 gallon can, not the fuel tank?

If so, are you really consuming that much fuel or is it just pumping that much and returning it to the stock fuel tank?

That is a really good point.

Without being there, I'm stumped.

I pretty much agree with Madhat on the injector sticking. Only other thing I can think of, which you already did, is the Fuel Control Actuator. I imagine it would throw a code though, and I don't know why the canister would be empty because of that.

seems like its going to stock tank, not seing decrease, on the fuel gauge, because I am siphoning it out of stock tank into 5 gal container, but nothing from relief vavle when I take the bolt out while its running. and it runs smooth, not missing

Did you pull your rail pressure sensor and look at the connector?
