15mpg on my first full tank

My truck is a year old, but new to me. After my first full tank, I hand-calc'd the mpg to be 15. I had the re-flash for mpg done about half-way through that tank. We'll see how this next tank goes. So, far 15mpg is hardly impressive. MUCH better than the 10-12 I was getting with my 5.9Gas Ram, but I have to say that I was expecting better from this 3rd gen. diesel. ...more like 18 or 19.

Where's the complaint? I'm not whining, its much better than my gasser, but I did expect better. I would expect 15 with a trailer hooded up, not with mostly highway miles.

Yes, its auto, winter fuel, but more than 1/2 of that tank was highway, hardly ANY stop & go...I live 30 minutes into the country and I only pulled my boat once....about a 30minute drive.

I've a got a buddy with a durasmack getting 17-18 all the time. I guess thats where my complaint is. He's got an auto, also running on winter fuel. Maybe he's not calculating right.

Was this mostly highway or city driving. If mixed it doesn't sound to bad either depending on the enviroment you travel, if strictly highway a little low, IMO. I have a 20 mile commute round trip to work, with I guess you could call mixed driving leaning more toward city style, serveral traffic lights I may catch or make it through. Shoter trips, stop and go will use more fuel, time of year, fuel blend, etc.

My type of driving or enviroment I usually see 16 to 17 if I take a some what of a longer travel (more highway). If it's mostly only running around town it will be 14 to 15 mpg. Highway 18 to 20 depending on how hard you push it and the weather conditions.

And "yes" a lot better than my 2000 Chevy Crewcab 4x4 auto 350 gasser with 3.73. A whopping 13.2 mpg highway at 60 to 65 mph, and about 10 to 11 mpg town driving.

Shop around for fuel.
I found a Landmark by me that was selling diesel 15 cents cheaper than the speedway I usually get it from. Can you believe I lost about 4mpg's ! So now when I fill up I try a new place each time to see which is best.

Is there any way of determining the fuel quality at a given station BEFORE filling up?

The truck is new to you. Make sure the Air Filter is clean and the FF is not dirty. Those can kill your milage too.

Yeah, the air filter minder is about 1/2 way there...I know some people think the minders aren't accurate though...haven't checked the FF.

Maybe he's padding his results a bit...I know I always do!

My truck is almost identical to yours, except for my 6 speed transmission. My mpg has been 19 to 20.4 on the hwy. I keep my rpm's at 2000 or under, and that seems to be the keep to good mpg on my truck. We are likely to still be getting winter fuel here in Wyoming, but I do use a fuel additive. That seems to give me a little boost, also. My mileage has increased steadily since new.

Winter fuel = 2 mpg

Went to the U.P. and back this weekend to get the sleds for summer storage, did some checking on fuel economy. 15.9mpg at steady 70mph for a couple hundred miles. Filled up at Roscommon, reset the odo and overhead, and did 80-85 (my normal unloaded hwy speeds). Hello, 12.3mpg.

Missing my 3.54's with 285 tires. I am getting 285's for this one, but I don't think it will get me where I need to be (80mph at around 18-1900rpm).

Only 2100 miles on it too. Can't wait to hook up the 12k boat trailer in a couple weeks to finally give her a real workout. Reminds me I need to get my exhaust brake installed.

bigblock....so are you blaming winter fuel or your 15mph increase in speed. I'm not following the comparison.

I had 285's on my last truck too and loved them, but I have to say I'm pretty happy with the BFG's (265's) that came on this truck.

Ditto for the rules of operation, circumstances and results.

Well, I was on the hwy all day yesterday and my computer is telling me I'm averaging 18 now. I've got about 1/2 tank left. There was a little boat pulling with the first 1/4 tank too, so its looking better I guess. Saturday I'm hoping to install an aeroturbine which will hopefully help a little bit more.
