I wanted to throw this post down and also say a huge thanks to everyone on here. My 05' dodge diesel 2500 has the 48re trans in it with 120K. One day I started it up and it wouldn't shift out of first gear. Sometimes it would once it redlined in first. Did lots of searches on here and everyone suggested pulling the pan, replacing the filter, replacing the governor solenoid, governor transducer and fluid.

I did exactly this and put it all back together. Viola!! it works again!! Thanks to everyone for all the great advice.

 

Yeap, a quick way to check it is to manually shift it through the gears from the stalk. If it shifts fine, then it is the governor transducer and solenoid pack.
