Truck wont shift out of 1st???
Truck wont shift out of 1st???
I am just finishing up on my 47rh conversion in my other 1st gen (92 3/4 ton auto 4x4 reg cab) and I am having a shifting issue. The truck will not shift out of 1st gear. It shifts between r/n/d/2/1 just fine but the only forward gear I get is 1st. I have ran the truck all the way to 3200rpm and it refuses to shift. I have confirmed the tv cable is swinging the bell crank lever to its full travel and the shift lever is engaging all gears. This is supposed to be a fresh built trans (it does look new) and what little I could accelerate it feels tight and loads the engine well.
Any body got any ideas?

Yea. reason i said that is because the TH-400 my dad just had built for our 13.0 Chebby pickup did the same thing...wouldn't come out of 1st gear.
When the trans guy had the valve body apart installing the shift kit, he had a 50/50 choice of where to put the checkball and he screwed up,
took it back to him..in 30 minutes he had it fixed.
blah blah yea i know its a chevy trans and not a dodge trans but the same goes i'm sure...

Trans was supposedly run on a trans dyno before I purchased it. It was confirmed to shift correctly and such. The trans then sat unused/uninstalled for over a year. Is it possible some thing is just kinda stuck? There doesnt seem to be anything else I can check install related so I guess the valvebody needs to come out.
Sorry guys not real familiar to trans internals. Is the Governor Bore located inside the Valvebody or is it part of the case?
This trans is also supposed to be equiped with a trans-go shift kit so its possible the install was botched but then it should have shown up on the dyno. hhhhmmmmmm.

If your trans has a TransGo shift kit then you'll have to play with the trans shift cable.
I had my 518 set to shift out of 1st at ~ 30 and out of 2nd at ~ 55.
After the rebuild on my 47RH the darn thing would not shift out of 1st until you got up 35 AND then let off on the throttle --- BANG into 2nd.
I had to bend the slider to pull the cable further up towards the engine.
Now under full throttle it shift out of 1st at 35 and out of second at 60 - both VERY authoritatively..No bang but solid...

So your saying I need to adjust where bell crank position is vs the throttle poition? I mean wide open on the throttle on the IP should be wide open on the trans and both should be at rest when completely off the throttle so how else would I adjust it? I realize that effects the shifting so I'm hoping your right and I dont gotta tear into the trans.

hey there, to answer your question about the kick down cable yes, full open on IP should also be full open on the trans, the 727, a518 and 47rhs are all the same, ive built all three
i had this same problem when i rebuilt my buddies 727, because i goofed and didnt clock the tail shaft housing correctly, which has a governor on it, and if its not bolted on correctly the trans fluid doesnt go to the governor and cant tell the trans to shift, Im not saying this is your problem but its something to keep in mind.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll be checking gov pressure
tomorrow and I'll go from there. I was told 0-1.5psi at
idle then 1psi per mph. I'll let every one know how it
turns out.

How I discovered what the solution was is I was working on the TV cable and throttle and accidentally left the TV cable off the throttle linkage - but the spring was still on the TV cable.
When I drove the truck and it shifted too quick I checked the TV cable and found it was over an inch further toward the front than the slot would allow.
That's when I started playing with the adjustments, bending things, and generally cussin' a storm because the tranny wouldn't cooperate.
But now that it's set - I'm real happy...Just need a triple disk low stall locking TC...
SANTA - are you listening ????

Confirmed governor pressure to be correct and confirmed I have 110psi of pressure in the trans in drive so I do have an aftermarket valve body. So seeing as how the governor seems to be functioning I'm gonna pull the valvebody and have the shop inspect it. Stupid trans. lol.
