Over heating problem

OK, This week I was towing my fifth wheel on very steep inclines. The truck over heated when I wasnt above 70 KM an hour. I had the fan clutch replaced today, I heard the roar of the fan a couple of times whej I started the truck off from a dead stop, but have not heard it again. Im not sure that the fan is actually doing anything other than freewheeling right now. My understanding is that the ECM provides signals to the Fan clutch to engage. Is there a way with no DRB III tool to test this. I am in the middle of butt **** nowhere and have pretty steep inclines to get out of here, I dont want to damage this engine.

Thanks in advance
