Welcome Carl. ;D
Where is home?
When the overnight temps drop into the low 30s, I start using the plug in block heater.
Check this thread for more info.

It's my pot and I'll stir it if I want to. If you're not careful, I'll stir your's as well!
Re:03 engine noisy when cold
Have not heard any diesel engine that is not noisier when cold. It's the nature of the beast.

Re:03 engine noisy when cold
ALL diesels make a good bit of racket in colder weather until they warm a short bit. Not at all peculiar to the cummins.

Re:03 engine noisy when cold
Thanks folks,
I had thought the new diesel version would be quieter in the am but if its normal great. Its amazing even the SO has great pick up. In about a year we are going to travel with a fifth wheel and I would like to know more about that chip for upgrading the HP. This board offers great suggestions.
The Shell Roginal...probably spelled wrong it suppose to be excellent for diesels. After 100k mi the engines look like new.
The dealer changed the oil before delivery and I changed it a bit early just for safety sake. Sounds like most of you go about 5k between oil changes???
A farmer from south Texas told me that is what they all use in their equiptment. The farmer also happens to be the county assessor who bought my old Ford sport trac. Very knowledgable man.

Ok I knew I spelled it wrong, here is some basic info.
Shell ROTELLA® T Multigrade
Shell ROTELLA® T Multigrade with Advanced Soot Control is a premium quality, heavy-duty multigrade oil for all-season use in diesel-powered or a mix of gasoline- and diesel-powered equipment. It meets or exceeds the warranty and service requirements of virtually all diesel and gasoline engine manufacturers – for both newer and older engines. It is recommended for all on-highway and off-highway applications, especially where all-season use is desired
Advanced Soot Control
Because of stricter emission requirements and changes in engine design, more soot goes into the oil in today’s high-technology diesel engines. ROTELLA T Multigrade with Advanced Soot Control provides superior protection against engine wear deposits and viscosity thickening due to soot.
ROTELLA T Multigrade offers:
Performance exceeding all requirements of today’s high-performance, fuel-efficient, low-emission diesel and gasoline engines operating in severe conditions
Exceptional low-temperature flow properties to help speed cold starts
Enhanced oxidation stability
Exceptional deposit control
Exceptional control of valve train wear
Superior engine protection and durability
Outstanding ability to handle soot
Extended oil drain capability
Applications and specifications
ROTELLA T Multigrade SAE 15W-40 with Advanced Soot Control is Shell’s primary recommendation for heavy-duty diesel and mixed fleet engines in all types of over-the-road service. It is also recommended for off-highway applications where all-season universal engine oil is desired, such as construction, mining, logging and agricultural services. Shell recommends ROTELLA T 15W-40 for 4-stroke equipment powered by Cummins, Mack, Detroit Diesel, International, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz and Caterpillar diesel engines, and most other heavy-duty diesel engines used in all types of service. We also recommend ROTELLA T for Ford and Dodge diesel trucks.
API CI-4 ready
For diesel engines, ROTELLA® T 15W-40 exceeds the requirements of Global DHD-1, API CI-4, CH-4, CG-4, CF-4 and CF; Mack EO-N Premium Plus, EO-M Plus; Cummins CES 20078, 20077 and 20076; Caterpillar, Detroit Diesel, John Deere, International, Volvo VDS-2 and others. For gasoline engines, it exceeds API SL, SJ and SH.

Carl,
What part of the country do u live in? There was a reference on your post about South Texas -If you live in a warmer climate you should probably consider running 15W40 weight oil....just a suggestion......

Re:03 engine noisy when cold
Okay that is what I thought. You have 15w40 Rotella T in it. (some call it rosmella because of the aroma after an oil change)
Well since we got the oil thing outa the way the diesels are noisy(er) when cold. Something to do with the injection. Enjoy your truck. Watch out for Hoss.......

Re:03 engine noisy when cold
Yep, we've especially noticed this with the 03s. As it cools off, the ECM turns off the pilot injection and your truck will begin to sound like an 02 and under Cummins. Totally normal behaviour.
