**** Lift Pump (I Think)

Hi all, I was stranded on the road. I was towed to local Dodge Dealership. Service told me my lift pump was going bad. Just hoping it would start turned key and it started! Service told me it would stop again and 3 days later it did. Dealer told me it would cost $3200.84 to fix. 12 hours of labor @ $135.00 an hour and rest was parts and taxes! I looked at him as if he was a Martian and left. Dealer told me that lift pump was in tank and that he could bypass the onboard computer with a module and every thing would be happy in my travels again. Now here is my question? I have a 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 cummings Turbo. By looking at things the Lift Pump is not in Tank It is below fuel filter on right side of block above the ECM. Am I looking at the wrong thing or is dodge dealer right about the lift pump being in tank? The code I am getting is P0628 which is I think Low voltage @ fuel lift pump. Can I buy The GFS-392 Performance System for 03 to 04.5 from DTR and cure my problem? Sorry for being so long winded but wanted try and describe every thing. Also this is my first post.

Yes, your truck came with the liftpump on the back of the fuel filter housing. Dodge retrofits them when they go out to the in tank unit. No way in the world it is that much. The parts are only around $500-$600 dollars. If I were you I would just upgrade to the GDP-392 kit and also get the 2 Micron filter setup. My LP went around 24,000 miles and it was done under warranty. By the way the LP is under warranty for 7yrs/100,000 miles. The $100 dollar deductable applies starting the last 2 years. So year 6 & 7. Hope this helps. They got there numbers wrong for sure.

Edit: They install a relay to take power to the new in tank unit. Not a module at all. Fill out your signature so we can see what year and type of truck you have. You can find it under user CP and at last Welcome to DTR.

How many miles do you have on your truck. The lift pump is covered under the 100k cummins warranty.

Some here, just had my lift pump go this summer at 90k miles and the dealer replaced it with the in-tank model like the '05 and newer. Since you are out of warranty I would go with the FASS or something similar and tryt o avoid the in-tank model due to the extra work involved with lowering the tank to replace it.

I was given an "off-the-cuff" quote of $3k by a Dodge Dsl tech the other day, so I guess that's the company line these days...

I'd call Vulcan Performance & try to figure something out that applies the resources towards a FASS pump or their Relocation Kit + a new pump to put in it--you might be voiding all or part of whatever Dodge warranty that you have left, though.

My vote is to go with the GDP 392 and 2 micron filter kit. Excellent kit, priced ok and not too hard to install.

Just looked up the fuel pump module(intank) from www.originalmoparparts.com and depends on tank size but not a ONE is over $350.00 bucks or so for parts.Thats 03 up.It gives suggested list and wholesale price and thats in the ball park.Whomever was quoting thousads of dollars is Labor can't be more then 3 hours or so.

Had a buddy with an 04 that had the same problem. He saw the ticket. Cost was just over $1200 for the install of the intank pump. Covered under warranty.

I pieced together my Walbro kit myself. Spent about $200. I am still using the stock filter to retain the heater and WIF sensor.

The dealer near me said about a $800 deal I think.I asked many months ago.Sometimes when a TSB/Recall/Updates come out the price is high customer pay and warranty. When its a costly repair item.after a while price starts to go down so the manufacture cost is less etc.Rack and Pinion units on some Nissan stuff was $1200parts.The next year(recall) they ended up being a $250 part.I put a URL to the Mopar parts.Look it for yourself. just common sense would tell me a intake pump/relay and dropping the tank to install could NOT be in the THOUSANDS of dollars. The quotes given were like pricing a NEW cylinder head etc.

I did the same thing. I think I was the second or third guy to ever do it. My Walbro has been purring like a kitten for 30k miles now. Why on earth would you pay a dealer to put another stock piece of junk pump back on your truck. My vote goes to Walbro GSL392. You can get one on Ebay for about $110 shipped. Nuff said.
