LIFT PUMP??? I think I need one, but WHAT IS IT??
LIFT PUMP??? I think I need one, but WHAT IS IT??
...and where is it...and how do I know if it's not working???

Oh, the woes. Lately my 99 CTD dually has acted "strange" during acceleration. Sorta stumble under power, especially around 2200 rpm at top of gear. Then I noticed it was sorta missing when going up hills, again more at higher rpm. I hadn't drained the fuel filter in a while so I thought I'd try that to clear things up. Drained about a pint of mostly fuel and maybe just a little water out, but then...it wouldn't start. Even after the "bump and wait" deal a few times have not helped. I can hear the pump whirring after bumping the starter but it doesn't seem to be pumping any fuel. I removed a plug in the top of the fuel filter canister, but nothing comes out.
My questions are:
1) Is this noise I'm listening to the famous "LIFT PUMP?"
2) If it whirs, does that mean it's not bad?
3) Without a fuel pressure gage, does the absence of fuel out the top of the canister tell me anything?
4) Assuming it's bad, where is this little bad boy and how do you go about changing it? I'm sure the procedures are somewhere in the posts here, but I wanted to get this SOS out before it got too late.
5) Am I reacting too soon? Maybe I just lost the prime and need to crack the injectors to bleed the air.
Any help you can give me would be most gratefully received.

Sincere thanks in advance!

Tom
Re:LIFT PUMP??? I think I need one, but WHAT IS IT??
A: This sounds like your lift pump being shot. It still turns, but either the bypass valve is shot or the vanes are stuck.
B: Follow the fuel line from the inj. pump to the filter, then after the filter down on the drivers side of the engine you'll find the LP.
C: Get a LP and a gauge ASAP, because the stumble you experienced was the VP44 running dry- meaning that since the VP44 takes the fuel it needs to inject and then some to cool and lubricate. When you feel that there is not enough to inject there is nothing to cool and lubricate....

HTH

AlpineRAM

How many miles on the truck? If under 100K DC should replace it under warranty. If over 100K, you should get another stocker from Cummins dealer, not DC, as it will be cheaper, or better yet, go ahead and fix the fuel system once and for all:
http://www.Stamey.nu/Truck/FuelPump.htm

There are other ways to do it, but that's how I did it. ;D

Chris
