Lift Pump/VP44
See Signature, I have lots of miles on this truck and it really has been running just great. Just the other day it started with an intermitten problem. It startes right up hot, cold doesnt seem to make a difference in outside temp nor motor temp. It starts then will stumble to 300 or 400 them jump to 1100 them back to 800 and them start this over again. Now if i rev it up it will sometimes stop this, sometimes it wont. It runs great after a few minutes in the city or running down the highway. About 2 months ago i was in Wyoming over in rocksprings, had been running down the interstate from cheyanne, with no problems other than dang cold outside, when i hit the off ramp and stopped at the light it died. It started right up and has never done this since. Any ideas, i have no codes, I service air filter, fuel filter every 15000 miles i run stanadyne in tank all the time to help with the lift pump and vp44 failure.
Need all the help i can get, no more warrenty.
Thanks to all that can.

I'd replace the fuel filter even if it's earlier than scheduled since that will be your next cheapest fix.
Could be a bad tank of fuel.
Have you drained your water separator lately?

Am I understanding that this is an 03 with common rail injection? If so, you don't have a VP44 to worry about. Sounds like your lift pump may be starting to fail. Unlike the VP44, which will suck enough fuel to run, the common rail engine will die when the lift pump stops supplying fuel. These pumps fail lots, and it would be the first place I'd look.

How would i go about checking the lift pump, do i need to get a fuel pressure gauge to do this with? I have changed the filter already, Now yesturday i drove it all over town here stopping at several stores, and it never did act up, so it really comes and goes, and with no other signs of problems before or after it does this.
Thanks for the help

If it primes and starts after a fuel filter replacement I would say the lift pump is working ok. Another test is to open the water seperator valve and see if fuel comes out when the key is cycled.

The official way to check the lift pump is by a flow test. Running the lift pump for 10 seconds needs to put out at least 400ml. If its less, the pump is bad.
Do you have any fault codes? Cycle the key three times and write down the P-codes.
