greasing 2011 3500 4X4 front drive shaft

Okay i got the needle nose grease gun adapter and found the fitting where I supposed to grease. I'm having a problem with the grease going in. It looks like it's not going in and making a mess. How can I tell if the grease is going in? Any tips?

The adapter has to be square with the flush fitting and you have to apply pressure to hold it against the mating surface. If it's at an angle you may not be able to get a good seal, there are many different styles of grease adapters and if you have a long enough one you can bend it a little to customize it. When did you last grease the fitting, if it's the first time then you may have a bad fitting or could have driven dirt/grit into it and clogged it. Mine from new had never seen a lick of grease. On my vehicles I don't wipe the grease from the fittings AFTER greasing but wipe them before greasing, sure the grease attracts dirt but it can be wiped off prior to greasing. I would also suggest a manual one handed grease gun and you will be able to "feel" the grease go in.

I have had success using a grease needle. You can carefully push the needle into the grease fitting and grease. The plus of the needle is that you know the grease is definately going into the ujoint.

Got this from another thread but not sure if it's any good. "NAPA sells a Needle Adapter, 4", part number 715-1213". Post #21 shows the P/N and a picture that looks like it has a rubber end, I've never seen or used a needle adapter with a rubber end but the rubber end bit may be an automotive thing to make it easier to use. https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...nt+drive+shaft

Take a look here and click on Part No. 05-037. This needle pushes right into where the ball is in the middle of the button grease fitting on the driveshaft.

Here are a couple of threads on the subject, albeit they address 3rd gen models. Whether it's the same set up on the 4th gens I'm not sure.

Good luck!

The 4th gen is the same as the picture in post #2 in the first link.

Arrow Still uncertain if it's greased

I believe if you have the sticker on the right side of the radiator support you will have the grease point on the double carden joint. Believe me it's hard to see as it isn't on the u-joint cross but just behind it. Take some Q-tips with some brake cleaner to clean out the recess. I marked the outer portion of the carden joint with some paint so I could locate the point easily in the future.

Also the hypodermic style needle I have will not go in the hole. It's .065" dia. (a 18 guage) I think and is too big to go in the hole. I bought the long needle NAPA 715-1211 adapter but can not tell if I am getting any grease into the hole. I used a welding tip cleaner to ensure the hole was open but when I try to force the grease in I always get some squirting out between the needle adapter and the recess.

Wonder if I could tale a small drill and open the hole up for the .065 needle??

Or does anyone have a part number / source for a smaller diameter needle??

Thanks to everyone that posted.

Noooooo! it's not a hole it's a flush style grease fitting that has a spring loaded ball that closes to keep dirt out the same as on a Zerk fitting. Sticking anything into the fitting except the correct adapter can cause damage and stop the ball from sealing dirt out.

Tantruck, as Busboy says, it's springloaded. Perhaps yours is just stuck? Maybe try using a nail or something similar and tap lightly on it to see if the ball is just stuck shut. The 18 gauge needle should fit.

Mine was stuck when I first got it. 60k and never greased. Once the ball is unstuck, greasing is not an issue.
