whats it do ?
what does the small box located under the center front do?

also when I hold the reset button, the word check comes on then the odometer cycles, then the gauges cycle and when started the instrument panel gauges max out and then all is normal. I assume that if there were any trouble codes they would be given at the beginning or the end.

many thanks

If you're refering to the box under the center console seat, I think that's the sensor for the automatic locking seatbelts.
If your looking at the small plastic covered box at the bottom center of the dash, it's the Air-Bag contols.

The sequence you started by holding the trip odometer reset is just to check the gauge cluster operation.
To check for trouble codes, switch the "ignition" key on-off-on-off-on, then look for the codes to be displayed in the odometer display.

Ed

The seat belt box is under the center seat. The air bag box is in the middle under the dash and is best left alone. Rap it hard enough and it will set off the air bags, not a good idea. People get killed fooling with those boxes. If you have to do anything with it or the cover over it, disconnect the negative cables and wait a while before messing with it. Going off as intended they will hurt you, off by accident is a real dangerous thing. Firemen have been killed at accident scenes assisting victems of accidents.

Re:whats it do ?
if I try the on off on off on sequence and nothing happens does that mean that I need to use a OBD reader to gather codes. I have '99 2500 quad 4x4?

The On-off thing started about mid-way the '99 model year.
Mine does it, others don't.
If yours doesn't, you need a ODB II set-up to pull codes.
Some larger Auto-Parts stores have them and will check codes for you.

My 95 does it, the check engine light blinks the codes out. I had an 86
Chrysler laser that did it, too. You have to do that sequence in under
5 seconds, I think it is, for it to work.
