Truck Won't Take Fuel

Filled the truck up about 3 weeks ago, no problems. Had to use the truck this week because the commuter car is laid up and on the way home I stopped for fuel and it took 20 minutes to get about 20 gallons in. Finally couldn't fool with it anymore because I had to go pick up the kids from school.

Is there a vent besides the one that runs up the side of the filler neck? I gave it a quick look at the station, the hoses weren't kinked, and the filler neck wasn't damaged. The vent that comes up the side of the filler pipe seems to be venting, it was pushing air out against the foam that was building up in teh filler portion of the neck. I replaced the filler neck about 3 years ago because the old one was looking pretty rusty and I didn't want to take any chances but its been fine all this time. I searched the site and found mostly info on the 98.5-2002 trucks but nothing on the 12 valvers.

Any suggestions before I start jacking up the bed and taking lines off?

Thanks.

John

My guess is the flow of the pump was too fast. Try again on your next fill up. Same thing just happened to me here at a new station.

Thanks. Definitely wasn't that. Been filling this truck for 10 years now and this was not normal. I wasn't even trying to fill it with the big spout at the semi section of the station, I was filling from the automobile pump.

Maybe the rollover ball in the fill tube is jammed in the sealed position.

I'd take a look at where the rubber section of hose connects to the tank, I think the rollover valve is in that section. It's just a round ball that will fall into the filler section (think an upside down funnel) when vehicle is upside down. Check for any trash/ debris in there or the filler tube. If that checks out clean out the vent tube. Not much more to filling it up than those 2 things.

Thanks. I remember the ball in the bottom of the replacement filler neck. I was under the impression that the rollover valve was something else, inside the fitting where the large vent hooks to the tank. Is there any other vent on the 12 valve tanks besides that one or is that it? I saw some posts about a small nipple on the top of the sender that was kind of like a fail safe if the wrong fuel cap was used but that's too small to have an effect on this. No?

The vent on the tank module is much too small to help while filling up.

I removed my rollover ***** when my trucks were new so I can use the high speed semi fill nozzles.
Plus i don't plan on going upside down and if I do diesel leaking out will be the least of my worries.

I noticed my rubber hose going to the tank was pinched, but it still takes fuel at full rate with auto nozzles

I recently had my tank out and there was no ball or backflow preventer of any type in the fill tube or vent....

The rollover ball mentioned in the fsm is in the module that picks up fuel and/or houses the in tank pump. Its pretty small and wouldn't affect fill.

Did you ever figure out what was casuing the problem?
