A/C won't take full charge

I have the typical leaking freon trouble. Passenger side is hotter than driver's. One control for both side's. I normally throw a couple of can's in and all is good for awhile. Now it seem's like I can't get it to take a full charge. It's not getting as cold as it normally does. While filling, I couldn't over charge if I tried,,,and I've tried. I was suspecting my firewall insulation. It had fallen down and the heater hose line (the one you guy's are doing the mod to ) rubbed it ragged. So I thought I was getting heat in from there somehow. I plan to try and patch it with something.

Now I just read in another thread someone said to run a hose over the condenser if it's hot out while you're trying to charge. Everytime I've tried filling, it was at a rest stop, or parking lot somewhere out on the road in Florida. And it's really hot. So do you guy's think the hose will help. Or do I have other problem's Thank's.

Dude, you need gauges! Don't ever attempt to add freon without monitoring the pressures. And the pressures varies with the ambient temperature.
Not using gauges is a good way of damaging the AC system.

Here's a copy of the pressure chart:

Dude.....Give me a little credit. I did have a gauge. But thank's for lookin out for me.

Speaking of gauge's. At first I was using a really cheap one, with the plastic connector. It would leak if I touched it just right. So I bought a better one today, with all metal part's. No leak's. Alway's when I charge, the gauge would go slightly into the yellow, ( over charge ) and then back down when you closed the valve giving a true reading. Well after charging with the new gauge, it was still low after 2 medium sized can's. So I went to put in a small can, and the gauge was stuck in the yellow. That's with out anything hooked up to it. I thought the stop leak made the needle stick or something. So I hooked up another can thinking it would clear it. It would go up, but not down. I put the old gauge back on, and now it's just a little in the yellow. I guess I better let a little out. But now I don't trust any of these gauge's. I hate to spend the big buck's on a gauge.

So anyway. It's a little better, but by no mean's as cold as it should be IMO. I'm going to get a temp gauge so I can give a number. God I hope I don't have the dreaded blend door issue. Wasn't there something about an upgraded line for the 06 that does something. I'll have to see if I can find the thread.

Thank's for the chart. Can you post some more of the instruction's. Thank's.

MikeyB,
Is that information from the service manual? If it is, where can I find one for my vehicle? Preferably from a cheaper source than Chrysler.

Sometimes it's hard to tell if someone is using gauges or not.

Yes, its the factory service manual. Geno's Garage has the manuals.

More pages from the manual.

Thank's for the info Mikey.

Well I'm lucky I didn't blow something up. The gauge I was using was way off. First it was reading low, then high, then low. The compressor started making noise. I thought I blew it. I used a 3rd gauge and it said I had almost 70psi in there. It was the kind that come's on the can and has a trigger. So I let a bunch out. $$$$

After all that, I upped the money for a nice set from Autozone. They were $75. Good thing I test fit them because they had short hose's. It was 2" too short. The guy there said he'd take 20% off I could use them. A couple of cable tie's and all is good.

I won't mention how I got the face full of freon,,,laced with green dye. Hopefully no one will be able to tell unless they look at me with a UV light. Ya know,,,my eye's really don't burn that much anymore. And, I'm starting to see a little better too.

Safety glasses is a must when working with freon.

A/C Problems

After 40+ years of A/C work.
1. Always use accurate guages.
Each guage should be set to zero with no pressure applied.
2. If you are using R-134 cans with a lubricant you may have over charged the amount of oil.
This will cause low cooling, as the oil takes up system area that should be refrigerant.

The BEST WAY to solve the problem.
Recover the system
Flush the system to remove the oil charge.
Install the CORRECT measured amount of oil.
Correct the leaks and vacuum the system.
Install the correct Measured refrigerant charge.

Otherwise you are just kidding yourself, with a "Temporary" fix.

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
I also thought you were using cheap gauges. Good gauges don't have a yellow band to warn. You can find a reasonablly good gauge set from Harbour Freight for sixty dollars occasionally.

If you have a leak,,,do you need to replace some oil. I've had this slow leak over 2 year's. Some of the can's I put in did have oil,,,other's had stop leak. I know it was all just a band-aid.

So I think you might be right saying I have too much oil if I didn't need to add any for a slow leak. I just haven't had the money to put it in the shop to get it fixed right.

And yes,,,at first I was using a cheap gauge, actually 2 different one's. Now I have a really handy, dandy, "professonial" set. Here's a link to them. I hope these are up to snuff.
