Track bar #1

Inner drag link #2

Sector shaft flopping like a dead trout in steering box #3.

A DSS will fix the steering gear woes, you can also pull the sector shaft and seals out of the box, hammer the roller bearing out thats in there and have a machine shop make you a brass bushing that actually fits the sector shaft as the bearing they use has a huge amount of play in it. New bearing wont help much either, been there done that.

Hi Steve
Who is DSS? and how much was the steering box. I'm hearing that the PSC, Inc. steering boxes are good.
On my truck I went ahead and replaced all steering components with heavy duty stuff. Lower ball joints were shot. I could feel them shift when I went around a switchback curve. Lots of play. Only thing left is the steering gear box now. I hope.

jack the frt end up and start moving the tires side to side with your hads you will be able to see what is moving....dont just start replacing parts that are not bad. try to wiggle the tire letf to right to check steering linkage and then grab the top and bottom and try to push then pull to check for ball joints.

If you dont feel comfortable diagnosing it yourself take it to a firestone or good year for a frt end inspection...its usually $19.99 and they will tell you if any parts have play...if none of them do, its your steering box

Yeah I jacked mine up to check the ball joints and I had about a inch of lower ball joint travel, well thats what it felt like. Took it to a local frontend only shop and I got under the lift with them and they and I could see all components had play. No charge to check it. I brought truck home and ordered and replaced everything with MOOG parts. So hopefully it will last another 200,000. I still have play in my steering though but it looks to be the steering box. I adjusted the steering box nut to try and take some play out of it but it must be worn too bad. I hope whoever else is having trouble gets theres figured out.

Where is the inner drag link located? I just replaced the tie rods and tie rod ends, track bar, (moog parts) stabalizer shock with an oversized one. It helped the problem at higher speeds. Still sloppy at low speeds. I'm am being told that my tires may have something to do with that. The shop said everything else looked fine. I am going to call and see what numbers they ended up at when they alignend the front end. From reading previous posts, it is my understanding that what they think is ok may not be ok. Has anybody used the numbers for cant and camber that are recomended in the article from Dodge tech that floats around here. I can't find the link right now, but will keep looking.

Guys,

Mine is a 2 wheeler so besides the DSS and new box, is there anyother aftermarket setups for it. Mine has been slowly getting worse, but I cant find anything loose.

It's nice to have your own lathe. I made a brass bushing for my steering gearbox. Notched it out for an o-ring, and drilled for a grease fitting. Pressed in fit for the gearbox, and .003 clearance on the sector shaft. Nice and tight now. 03 track bar and heim joint steering fixed the rest. Don't even need a steering damper with 37" tires. More pics in my photo gallery.

Sweet! So this fixed the slop in the steering box, huh. I will put my uncle and his machine shop to work for me. What is this heim joint? Had a farmer friend here that had to replaced some joint down in the steering column, is this it? Mine has a small pop to it every once in a while.
Thanks,
Brian
