There goes my steering...HELP!
As I was walking to my truck from the gym the other day I noticed a nice puddle right under mt steering box. I drove right over to Kragen and put a puttle of stop leak in it. Now last night I was driving it and i started getting some whining noises. I quickly came home and parked it. I also noticed a trail of fluid leaving my house ! What do you guys do in this situation? Im probably goin to take the box off real soon. Should I have it rebuilt or should I buy a whole new unit?

I would just buy another unit and swap them out. I have used the NAPA ones-about 200 bucks, most of the other places have them (advanced, auto-zone, etc.) There is another company that builds a "premium" box, I want to say AGR, but I cannot remember for sure.

What ever you do be careful if your going to be driving it. My power steering pump just died and lost all power assist to the brakes and steering. Not fun to try to stop one of these trucks with no help.

You can get a seal kit and rebuild it yourself... But I know thats a real PITA to do. But cheap. My old 1972 blew a shaft seal. I re-build the entire steering box for about $45 bucks.
But I ended up buying a whole steering box becuase of a bad pin (wore out) inside that hold the power valve. Oh well live and learn...

Makes sure it is not a shaft seal, or line leaking.
My truck leaks a little PS fluid, but it's from the pitman shaft, not the PS pump...
A little PS whine is normal when low on fluid. Unless you lost all power assist and brakes for several miles, I wouldn't worry about damage to the pump...
