Grinding and clanging

Well, the title says it all. I recently(600 miles ago) had the two tie rod ends replaced and had an alignment in order to get an inspection sticker. I was driving around and almost hit someone so I locked up the brakes. A mile down the road, and there was a grinding noise in the passenger side front end. I parked the truck and looked over the front end and did not see any immediate physical damage. The next morning, the truck ran fine and I made a 5 hour trip home where I heard some grinding at times in the front end (still on the passenger side). The trip home was uneventful and the truck steered fine and braked fine. Also, it ran down the road without pulling to either side. When I got home, I took off the wheel and inspected the brakes and u-joints. They appeared good on the passenger side. I drove the truck to work without any problems and I was about 5 miles from home when a clanging started coming from the drivers side front end. The clanging would stop when I engaged the brakes but would begin when I let off the brakes and I was rolling down the road. Pushing the accelerator until about 1500 to 1750 would kill the sound a bit. The funny part is I also didn't experience any steering, braking, or other problems. So, for those of you who hate reading a long paragraph like me:

Passenger side grinding
Drivers side clanging which stops when braking
4 wheel drive engages okay and runs okay
new tie rods and all there isnt any outside damage to the front end

If anyone has any ideas they would be welcome. I have done searches on here and I have found a lot of 4 wheel drive problems but not much when not in 4 wheel drive.
I have leaking drivers side axle seal but the fluid is just a little low.

My thoughts are that I might have a differential problem, axle issue, or a bearing problem. but the truck doesnt wobble and has little to no play in the steering.

Thanks again,

DK

you may have bent the rotors if you slammed em on hard, although I've only heard of this once in my life.

Do you get a pulsating brake pedal, or shake in the steering wheel when you brake? That's usually a sign of a warped rotor.

The truck brakes fine and there isnt any vibration in the front end. That is what is funny about the whole situation. The rotors look fine and they dont appear to be warped in any way. Do you think that it could be a problem with my front differential? Or does this sound like a brake problem like two of you asked about?

Thanks for the help I will have to check back tonight after work.

I had a situation when i had new pads put on i breaked really hard and ended up cracking the pad that was loose and would give this sound when driving going away when breaking ended up driving in reverse hitting the brakes and this is when I discovered the broken pad piece. only the size of a pea. hopefully it is simple like this. also not a metalic sound like the dust cover. good luck

i had a similar problem one time on my 1500. there is a two piece axle on the passenger side when it got dry it burnt the plastic bushing up. was a cheap fix if you can do it yourself. 4x4 still worked fine on it but sometimes took a little longer than normal to engage. the 2500 should be bout the same hope this helps

Does anyone else know much about this axle bushing that might be bad?

Well, no sounds today and I went the same distance as yesterday. Hopefully it was just the brake pad piece that broke off. That would be a less severe problem than what I was expecting. Would a shot shock make the clanging and rubbing sounds? Other than that I still am a little mystified about what is happening. There hasnt been a problem with anything functional so I am going to drive it until something goes wrong. Thanks and I will keep you updated.

yes, i had front left shock problems, loose and rattleing a bit from a small gap with the bolt and bushing, also the control arms needed attention.
