Fuel gauge fluctuatuion

Has anyone experienced a problem with a fuel guage reading all over the place? I'll run a full tank to 3/4 with no problem then a real quick drop from 3/4 to half. When guage is around 1/4 and I shut and restart, the fuel low light will come on and alarm will sound. I ran it down to 1/8 tank and when alarm sounded, shut down and restarted. After running at idle for a few minutes, the guage went up to around 5/8 tank. If I fill up at this time it will only take 16 to 17 gallons. What do think? Sending unit, guage, grounding? any ideas where to start? I do a lot of towing and it's driving me nuts not knowing how much fuel I really have. Thank's
Re:Fuel gauge fluctuatuion

My sending unit went out at 52k. Read 1/3 of tank and ran out of fuel in the middle of a busy intersection that was fun. Previous to that it had never shown a sign of being off or acting funny. I usually watch the mileage to the gauge but that particular time I didn't. Have since found out that it is a relatively common problem according to the dealer.

Replaced my sender a couple weeks ago. The sender was real dirty but it wasn't worn out. After I cleaned it it worked perfectly according to the ohm meter...so I saved it for a spare.

Probably the sender, but put the truck computerinto 'self check' mode to pull a code. I listed the directions for self check below.

1: Hold the odometer/trip button in on the dash, and turn the ignition key to the "on" position. Then let go of the button.
2: Your odometer will read "CHECK", and your gauges and lights will be acting weird, that's OK.
3: After everything goes back to normal, turn the key off.
4: Turn the key to the "ON and "OFF" three times ending in the "ON" position. Your codes, if any will appear in the odometer. If there are no codes, and/or after the codes are displayed "P-done" will appear in the odometer.
If you missed any of the codes, repeat step 4.
5: Click on the link below to interpret the codes.

http://www.obdii.com/codes.html

Hope this helps

Re:Fuel gauge fluctuatuion

My 99 did something like that the other day. First it went to full when I knew it had a half tank in it, then a couple more miles down the road it went to empty and the alarm started going off . Then a couple miles further it went back to normal and seems to be reading accurately, as it WAS pretty low tonight and I still drove it about 20 miles after the alarm and did not run out. :
I thought sender when it was stuck on full, as there is a TSB about that, but the empty things is a mystery, unless I have a bad electrical connection between the cab and the sender.

I will not actually try to track it down until it starts happening regularly.

Chris

Re:Fuel gauge fluctuatuion

Thank's guys!!! I'm ordering the sending unit tomorrow. I did find something else in the forum archives about a repair kit available for about three bucks from Huey C. along with a full discription of the problem, cause and corrective action. Check it out.
