exhaust smell

Now that it has gotten cold I'm using the defroster. Once the engine starts to warm up and I can get a little heat out of the vents I can detect an exhaust odor coming into the cab. It has a different smell than the normal Rotella new oil smell.
I originally put a piece of cardboard infront of the radiator to increase warm up time. But once I started to get this odor I pulled the cardboard out. Now I still have the smell.
Has anyone else experienced this?

check that the rubber seal along the edge of the firwall (seals the hood to the firewall when the hood's closed)

it's common for part of it to fall down and it's job is to keep under hood fumes out of the hvac intake

I had the same problem. Open up the air box under the wipers by removing them and removing the plastic cover. Seal up all holes. I did it with alloy duct tape leaving a small slot at the bottom of the flapper holes. (There are supposed to be flappers on one hole at each side allthough the factory has a habit of forgetting to install them). That along with the underhood seal, as mentioned, should greatly reduce the fumes. Then get the carbon filter set up from Geno's garage. My wife loves the no deisel fumes now!!

Aren't the holes there to drain water out of the air duct?
Don't think I'm going to be sealing mine up.

Your right infidel If you plug those you will end up with a swimming pool inside your truck. I just fixed a little car that had the cowl drain holes plugged up, the water went threw the heater duct and under the carpets. It had a small lake in the back seat!
I would check and see if you have a exhuast leak under your hood some where.

Thanks for the help. I had already checked the seal and it was in place. I'll take a better look at the exhaust.

The cowl box is supposed to drain, yes, but there are huge holes in it that can be sealed. As I said I left the bottoms of the flapper holes open for drainage. Neither one of the rubber flappers that are suppose to be ther were installed at plant.
