Re:Strong exhaust smell
Have you checked for leaks under the hood? Sometimes the bolst loosen from the down pipe and let a little out. This would let it come in from the vent.

Check the bolts on the exhaust manifold and look for cracks.
My exhaust manifold had a small piece missing.

Check the rubber cowl seal across the engine compartment.
If it falls down, you'll get fumes into the fresh air intake.

Re:Strong exhaust smell
Check for crack in exhaust manifold, mine had one major crack and one minor one, on each side of outlet.
If that is the problem, purchase from Cummins, about $165, vs dealer at $395-$420

Re:Strong exhaust smell
I would check all the bolts on the manifold, then the four that hold the turbo on, then the ones downstream of that to the exhaust pipe. It is possible to have a cracked manifold. You can check underneath it for cracks with a mirror.

Also, look for some black soot around the gaskets at each connection. Those gaskets are compress-able metal gaskets, and usually leak upon retightening...black soot=exhaust leak.
