I have never seen a 255/85/16 in load range E. So that wouldn't be any good for towing.

Why?
The 255s have a load rating of 3000lbs vs the 235 of 3042lbs. A difference of 252lbs total. My wheels have a load capacity of 2600lb each, so wouldn't anything over that be okay?

i would also take into consiteration the ply rating too.... a load range D is an 8 ply tire and a load range E is a 10 ply tire... i'm gonna stick with the E.... but i have 3.54's and 235/85's

confused

How do they determine the ply rating of tires? I just went out and looked at my tires.
It says right on there 10 P.R. Load range E. But if you read the fine print, it says: sidewall 2 plies polyester; tread 2 plies polyester, 2 plies steel, 1 ply nylon. None of which add up to ten.
If the load capacity of different tires is equal or nearly so, the whole 6, 8, or 10 ply thing seems pretty much worthless.
What am I missing?

I'm running 255/85/16. They are load range D. They are from my local Les Scwab Tire. Wild Country SXT.

I carry a 4000lb camper and tow an 8000lb trailer behind that, on a three foot extension. I air up to 65psi. Been doing that for over 200k and eight years. No problems at all.

I had Hercules terra trac 255/85r16 load rance D on my dually for a long time hauling a 3500lb camper and a 4500lb boat no problems what so ever. Just make sure they have a narrow section width (BFG's do) and your ok. Not all 255's measure the same Dunlops is one that I know is wider and won't work on dually trucks. I think its something like 10.8 section width.

I had same question too and never got the answer, I calculated the sidewall are to be multiplied by 2 since we have...2 sidewalls on each tire, but in your case it still adds up to 9 plies not 10
