Biggest Widest Tires

What are the tallest and widest tires I can safely put on the stock rims on my 99' 2500?

I would guess 285/75R16s without rubbing on those stock rims. Are they steel or aluminum rims?

I agree w/ the sheriff, but my buddy runs 315/75R16s on his '96 w/ stock steel wheels. They do rub a little.

Probably a dumb answer but there the same rims on every 99'ish Dodge around that I've ever seen. It's an SLT so 2 tone paint, chrome bumpers, etc. The rims are 17". Possibly aluminum? I guess I'm not sure.

All 2nd gen. 3/4 and 1 ton rams came with 16" wheels either chrome clad steel or aluminum.
If your truck has 17"s they are either aftermarket or from a 3rd gen. ram. Take a pic or find a pic online and post it.

305/70-16's with no rubbing issues at all. If it is a 99 and they are original wheels, they are steel. The Aluminum ones did not come around until 2000 or 2001.

Y'all are right. They are only 16" rims and the chrome clad steel. I have 285/75R16's on it right now. Remind me which number is the width and which the height again? I know what the 16 is. If a bigger tire like a 305/70 were to rub, what does it rub on? When you turn the wheel hard?

285=width, 75=aspect ratio, 16=wheel diam. So with a width of 285mm across, the aspect ratio of the side wall = 75% of the overall width.
Looks like a 285/75/16 measures out at 32.83" tall. And a 305/70/16 measures out at 32.81" tall. The 305s are wider, therefore may rub. If they do it will most likely be on the lower control arm at full steer, and/or the fenderwell opening under suspension articulation.

I see everyone say this, but was it a diesel thing, I know a guy that has a V10 2500 that has Aluminum ones and his truck is 1999. He has owned the truck since new and never replaced them.

Asking questions always bring more questions. Your largest tire size has a few equations that must be addressed. First is the actual width and aspect ratio (that's the 285/75 number). Wider means more likely to rub against the inner fender liner or upper/lower suspension arms. The width of your wheel will also dictate how wide of a tire you can run. Find out your tire specs at a place like http://dodgeram.org/tech/specs/Ramspecs.htm and then go to tirerack.com to find tires/specs that fit in that rim size.... Looking at those sites you will find that the 1999 steel wheels were 16x6.5" and the largest tires on 6.5" wide rims would be something like 255/70R16 or 245/75R16.... You can run wider but the tire would probably crown and you would be left with crappy tire wear and ride qualities....
