Another power window question
Another power window question
Hi all. My passenger window hasn't worked for years now. I pulled the door panel and found the window rolls up, just not down. Better than the opposite. I checked both poles at the male plug the window motor connects to and got 12 volts, switch up and down respectively. I ran the motor both ways off of the battery to confirm it works. I must have a ground issue somewhere, Where does the passenger window down function ground? Are all window functions on a common ground? If so it doesn't make sense to me because driver works both ways and pass only works up. I have been looking at wires all over. I think if there is a broken wire it must be in the door. I figure this using a multi-tester and having the wife click all window switches. I have ruled out the switches. I appreciate any insight anyone can give me. Thanks in advance.

Without being there to see and test in person, all I can add for any amount of help is that 12 volts isnt terribly complicated. If there's power to the switch and the switch tests conductive on both the up and down position and that power is making its way to the motor which is also grounded then there's no reason it wouldn't work unless there's something wrong with the motor itself.
Thanks for the response Katoom, I got it figured out. It is my driver side window switch. It was making good enough contact to read on my multi-tester, not enough to run the motor.
I learned a lot about the window circuit today. I read in a thread on this forum to bend up the little springs inside the switch. I did it and all is good. I have been putting this off for a long time. Thanks for the help!

Hi Robert. Here is the link to the thread.

I should have posted it! Look at Kemble's post, 2nd to last post on the thread. What I did was remove the driver side switch, and opened it up. It was actually really easy. Inside you can see where the plastic deals on the switch lever hit the little springs. Mine were bent down from 21 years of use. I carefully bent them up ever so slightly while making sure not to bend the contacts out of wack. The fact that the contacts were not completely touching caused it to arc. you could see that the contacts were burned. I sanded them, put the switch back together, and nothing. I took it apart again, bent the springs up and PRESTO! The wife is happy now and other people will ride in the truck again.
