Well 5th gear fell off today....what are the options....

Im looking at a quick fix.....is there an updated nut? if so is it worth a dam? And can I atleast get it back together by only removing the tail housing? I did a search but came up empty...

Re:5th gear fell off.....

yes there is an updated nut.
Through DC about 40 bucks for kit.
I've been runnin it 2 years.
I work mine pretty hard.
And the tailshaft is all that has to come off.

You will have to tighten to 300 ft. lbs.

1320 try to borrow or rent a torque wrench the peace of mind knowing you got it torqued proper will be worth it. Annother idea you might try is Sears buy it use it and then decide if you wanna keep it or return it.

Sorry to hear about that. When and how did it happen? Where you towing something or just cruising? Do you tow heavy in fifth? Just wondering cause I would like to keep this from happening to me for as long as possible. ;D

Re:5th gear fell off.....

I wasn t towing anything....empty @ 75 . I see the problem.....the main shaft is miss designed...the gear itself works the nut loose because of the slack in the splines. I bought an after market main shaft kit....that is splined all the way for 5 th. It will be fixed on saturday......

Glad to see you are getting the shaft. How much did it cost and how much is it to install? I was under the impression it was very difficult.

Re:5th gear fell off.....

I was going to do just the nut....but thats 50$ plus its not really a nut....it takes a special wrench ( I didn t check on a price) but I bet its 30+ $ plus oil etc...and it would be 100$ and my time....but the main shaft kit was 500 and 275 for labor....and I didn t have to spend any f my time doing it....would have taken me all week end........so the 275 was worth it.....just need to get everything else done now....
