Welding 5th gear nut to 5th Gear

Ive been hearing that on a nv4500 to weld the nut to 5th gear instead of a shaft because it will always keep the nut tight and keep 5th gear from beating on it and also it keeps you from weaking the shaft any body else heard this or an opinion about this any input would be great thanks

Welding it will weaken the shaft, as you will be ruining the hardening process. I would not weld it personally.

welding will make it hard but brittle. to keep it from getting brittle youd have keep heat on the shaft and very slowly cool it. welding is an option i wud take only if i were in a real tight spot monetarily or parts WERE NOT available and i had to have it. i believe they make an updated secondary shaft to resolve this problem. might look into that

I know it's not right, and is a band aid, but I welded mine in my old 95...lasted another 50K miles, then I swapped the tranny for an upgraded unit before I sold the truck. The welded tranny was holding fine, just a little rattly

Not that I would recommend it, but it does work....and this was on a 400hp truck that towed HEAVY!

I've welded the nut to the gear on several builds, never had a problem. My 95 has been running with the nut welded to the gear for over 100K and it is loaded to 20K lbs every day. If the splines are worn, eventually it will either strip the splines or wear the threads out of the nut. Have seen a few that the nut was welded to the shaft where the shaft broke. It's just a patch, but it does work for quite a while.

I would only weld it if you're planning on selling the truck soon.
The problem isn't the nut, it's the shaft.
Unless you replace the shaft with a fully splined one it will happen again.

Transfer case 1998 dodge Cummins. 2500 5 speed

I had my transfer case rebuilt.Went to put it in and it likes 3/4 of an inch from sliding all the way back to mate to transmission. Is it possible 5 gear nut backed off not letting the transfur case slide all the way in.
