Daily Driver
Alright heres a question, Now honestly the CTD we have now doesnt do much in the line of heavy work. More of a driver. It causlts about 1500 lbs 4 times a year and tows maybe a 5000 lb trailer once or twice a year. But its been great and great mileage. Now i just started in my Diesel tech class and everyone ( even the kid that has a 95 ctd) said you dont want one for a daily driver its not good on them. Is this true? I know that if you drove it 10 blocks to work and parked it, that would kick its butt, but thats hard on any engine. So what do you all think?
Re:Daily Driver
I drive mine 26 miles to work, the same as I have the last three since 1989. Mine (99) just turned 133000 this weekend. Real short trips are bad but like you say, that goes for any engine.
Re:Daily Driver
Exactly what i said. I mean i have an old 82( i think) chevette with a 4cyl diesel in it. that thing is just a putts around town car and its runnign great still...... "Maybe" there thinkin big truck motors, maybe those might be hard on them.
Re:Daily Driver
YOU'RE RIGHT, DAILY DRIVING IS HARD ON ANYTHING. I BOUGHT MINE NEW AND USE IT TO PULL MY BOAT. I DRIVE IT TO WORK ABOUT 7MILES DAILY, WHEN I GO INTO SOMEWHERE FOR A SHORT STOP, I LEAVE IT RUNNING AND LOCK THE DOORS. IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT, ALOT OF THE IN TOWN DELIVERY TRUCKS HAVE THE CTD, AND HAVE NOTHING BUT GOOD LUCK OUT OF THEM AND THAT IS STOP AND GO AT ITS WORST. I JUST SERVICE THE TRANNY EVERY 50K AND CHANGE THE OIL EVERY 5-6K AND HAVE NOT HAD A PROBLEM. EVEN ON THE SAME TRANNY.

yeppers. Frind has a powerstroke 96 i think not for sure but anyway, he was having some troubles and his engine was " glazed" this was a while ago. He bought it ( or his dad did) and he only had a school permit of 1 mile to school. so 2 miles a day. for 2 years. sounds like good fun to me!

Most of the big brown ups'ers that I have seen only know one thing too, hammer to the floor.

You're right DD.
They don't need a throttle pedal,....they just need a light switch.

Re:Daily Driver
I think you can look at it this way. I'm sure you've heard the phrase,'all highway miles'. Makes a big difference in the longevity of ANY vehicle. My truck, for example. 356,000 miles. Still going strong. Did the engine at 245,000 , but that's cause I wasn't watching the exhaust temp like I should have been. :-[ When it was tore apart, other than the obvious score marks on the cylinders, you could still see the cross-hatch marks. I was pretty impressed, with 245,000 miles. Now, 98% of those miles were highway. If they were all city, stop & go, I'm sure it would have looked different. Long story short, short trips will shorten engine life, but a gasser would be significantly shorter than your CTD. Drive it, take care of it, and you'll be driving it for a long time. (my 2 cents)
