Steering failure, gear box fell off
Steering failure, gear box fell off
I am very lucky! Yesterday after I got home from a long trip with my truck and travel trailer, and after I had successfully parked the trailer, my steering completely failed. I had it towed to a local mechanic. He said the gear box mounts had all sheared off or worked thier way out. One of the mounting ears on the gear box had broken off alltogether. He says usually you can send in the core and get a rebuilt one, but since one of the ears was broken off we could not do that. He told me if he could get a brand new one, it would be super expensive. He found a gear box at a local salvage yard for $375. What do you guys think? How could it have happened? Is it cool to put in a used box? Does that sound like we are in the right price range for parts?
Thanks... and I hope all of you are as lucky in 2007 as I am!

I know there a an aftermarket company that makes gearboxes but i cant think of it right now. Its a big name copany and most guys go with them when ome fails. Im shure is someone reads this they will jump in with it or if i remember ill be back with it. But do a google search and get an aftermarket. Thats my opinion if your gonna spend a few bucks do it rite.
No way dude! $375 for a used gear box is way too much! You can have a new one from PSC for less than that. I'm not sure about their core policy, but don't replace yours with one from the junk yard for that kind of $$$ !!!
Try this place www.carsteering.com they only get 75 bucks for the core. A rebuilt one, I think is around 200 without the core. I know this cuts out the profit on the parts for the installer but Oh well. You can get a rebuilt one without the core for that kinda money.($370)
I got one from Advanced for around $250 including the $50-70 core. Lifetime warrenty. No problems so far. I know of a buddy who has had nightmares with his aftermarket one, and I think he went back to a stock one.

Install it for $200? It ain't that hard. I've done it 4 times now with my PSC box. I say do it yourself. Hardest part is getting the lines undone. Not a lot of room. I paid I think $350 for my PSC box but I've had some unresolvable issues with it. Hope you have better luck with your AGR.
