I wouldn't, they seem to break at the heat affected zone when you weld them.

Probably depends on how you do it & what filler you use. I wouldn't use mild steel with a MIG welder if I had to do it, i'd probably TIG it.

after just going through this and having it over hauled, I would look up Quad4x4 on google and if your hasn't broken yet or just the 1st time, i would get his replacement nut. After reading his stuff and examing the stock stuff and the weld option his option really makes sense. My nut broke, welded a new one to the shaft. Broke 200 miles later. Only towing gross of 20k and chip turned down.

Welding is a short term bandaid.
This is the right way to fix it> http://quad4x4.com/NV4500%205th%20Ge...0Solutions.htm

If you are going to weld it, double nut it and then weld the two nuts together, don't weld on the shaft.

I welded my nut to the shaft about 4 1/2 years ago now. stitched it good and hot 7018 iirc. I abused the bag off that truck, no issues. sold it since an its still on the road just fine.

I wouldn't weld it to the gear, as gears are usually case hardened and I have reason to believe that it will effect that hardening. Here's what I did:

Almost 2 years now and never another issue.

When I would have one do that, I would spend the cash, and buy the output shaft that has full splineswhere the 5th gear goes on the shaft. Its the problem, there isnt a 100% contact on the gear to the splines, and no matter how tight you put the nut on, or unless you weld it, the gear walks on the shaft, and it comes loose. Its purely a badly engineered part. Thats it. When we went with the fully splined shaft, we never welded another nut, and it curred the issues. Never saw another one come in the door unless it hasnt had the upgrade yet.
