2001 Dodge Diesel

Hey Never posted on this site before but everyone seems to be very knowledgable.

So here is my issue I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel (24 Val). The has around 150,000 miles on it. At times it idles high then stops for a good amount of time and will kick back in... It happens at random I can't link the times it does it to have any similarties. Weather I am pulling a trailor or not doesn't seem to matter it does it on both. Has anyone eles heard of this? I was wondering if maybe it was the computer having a issue?

Thanks,
Santos

PS:Sorry for any spelling errors.

What RPM are you considering high idle vs. normal? I've never seen it swing too much. There is a cold weather high idle that will kick you up to around 1150-1200, but it seems kinda late in the year for that one (at least on my Texas weather calendar).

It sounds like it might be your grid heater kicking in and out. How long does it do this? Only when you first start or all of the time?

It could also be your Air conditioner compressor kicking on or off.
It will run when any part of the defroster is on.

Could it be your fan kicking on? Is your coolant temps getting hot? Mine kind of does that right now because my radiator is gunked up from the blow by bottle making a mess everywhere.
