2 general electrical questions
QUESTION 1: Can I tee into one of the two small wires coming out of the alternator, to activate a relay? Both wires are powered only when alternator is turning, but seeing as the regulator is 'computer controlled', am I just asking for trouble?
I'd like to do it this way, as I don't want the relay activated by way of key, or a switch, if possible.
Any other ideas? Oil pressure activated maybe???
QUESTION 2: I know the formula for watts and amps for 110/120 volt, but is it basically the same for 12V?
For example, how do I figure out how many amps will be drawn by a 100 watt bulb? 200watt? 400 watt, etc.,etc.

I dont know if I would want to wire into any of the control wires on the alternator, one is probably the field control and should not be used to run items on your truck.
as far as calculating current draw:
I=P/V
example 100W/ 10V
= 10A
Have fun

Go with the oil pressure switch. There's an spare port on top of the oil filter housing and you can get plenty of power off the back of the alternator.

I'm hooking up an auxilary battery in the back, to run my 12 volt stuff.(cooler, radio, etc.) I've already run into 'truck starting problems', if I don't re-start the truck within a few hours, especially in colder weather where the heating grid burns longer. Also, plain and simply hard on the truck batteries.

I got a 77 Dodge Jamboree Motorhome with a 480W amp it the house side battery that I can run forever until the battery in the house dies. Then just start the engine up for a while and charged battery again!

Yup, thats the plan. That's why I don't really want to have an 'in-cab' switch, because I'd for sure forget to turn it off while stopped, thus draining the main batteries.
Trying to keep everything automatic, yet simple. Think I'm gonna go with the oil pressure activated solenoid, though.
