won't shift out of 1st

1999 2500 auto, i think it's a 47re. with 82000 miles
had this problem 2 months ago, went away after prefoming APPS reset. also changed trans fluid, filter and adjusted bands, no metal found in pan.
so yesterday it happened again, pulled over and just disconnected battery for 1 min and fixed it. but today same problem, disconnected battery again and re-set APPS.. fixed until??????
is this a bad APPS or a soleniod in the trans.? it seems electrical, but i'm clueless????
i did have a bad speed sensor 2 years ago, due to ABS light and loss of the speedo.
thanks for any help!

sounds like the governor solenoid in the tranny, cheap and easy to replace

Mine likes to stay in 1st (until about 1900 rpm...even at low throttle) ONLY after I start the motor. Once it's been into 2nd once, it is normal after that... Then it is fine until I stop somewhere like 7-11. Once I shut it off it goes back through that routine again.

This became this way after I let the truck sit for 5 days while I went on vacation. When I got home, it appeared some little gremlins had been to work on the tranny.

I could do another apps reset. I do that every month or two anyway. It seems to behave better if I do.

Later,

My 06 is doing the same thing, but it will not come out of 1st until 2900rpm and that is only after I have let it sit for about 30min.

it's not the apps

I have the same problem, and I don't even have an apps. I have a tps, but I have checked it, and the voltage is smooth from no throttle to full throttle. It must be something in common from the 12 valve all the way up to the 3rd gen. maybe a shift solenoid as mentioned earlier?

Bob might be right.

I had the same problem and it was fixed by the transducer. JBody clarified the term in the following thread. I found that the part replaced was a transducer.

Not sure about the part number for the 99, but I have the one listed for the 2001.5 in the thread:

Mine was doing the same, mechanic said the tranny was going out. Took it to another Dodge shop and they changed a sensor on back driver's side of the transmission. it took about 3 minutes and the tech told me to bring it back if that didnt fix it. They didn't even charge for it.

Later,
Mine was doing the same thing except it was hanging in 2nd until about 1900 RPM. I suspect yours is hanging in 2nd instead of 1st. My speed was between 25 and 30 MPH when it would finally shift out of 2nd. It would do it only once after starting then it was normal until I would turn it off.

I fixed it by changing the "outout shaft speed sensor" which is on the tailstock of the transmission, upper right side. Cost about $25.00 and problem solved. Mine was setting a P0720 code.
