HELP--Auto won't shift out of 1st unless I let off the gas.

Went to school today and the truck was fine. Went to leave at the end of the day and as I was driving though the parking lot, the truck would not shift out of 1st. It usually hits second at least. As I got on the road I realised I had a problem. No matter how light or hard I get on the coal, it will not shift out of 1st unless wait until I know it would normally shift, then let off the gas slightly.

Once it gets to second, if I accelerate anything beyond grandma mode, it downsifts to first...and it doesn't care the speed/rpms. When it downshifted one time, it was well into redline (3500rmps). This was because I stepped into it a little harder when it was on the top end of 2nd.

After it's in 3rd, I can drive it like I stole it and it shifts fine.

I am due a fluid change (only 4,000 past due), but I seriously doubt I drove 20 miles, parked, then something went wrong.

What could this be???

By the way, other than a scotty and 4" exhaust, it is stock.

Run the codes. Most likely a governor solinoid.

I am dealing with that right now. Check the codes, but like mentioned above, sounds like a governor sensor, and/or Solenoid in the valve body.

bet you have an engine light on, and the codes come back P1757 and/or P1762 (or 63 cant remember which)

Man, I was all excited. I just went outside and did the key on/off 3 times and got a Pdone with no codes. Do I need a code reader, or would they show up there? Could it be the problem even if the codes don't show up. I've been wanting to do a valve body, think this would resolve the problem?

It could be low on fluid. Do a filter and flush and I bet it will be gone. I do mine every 20-25 thousand goes in pink and comes out almost the same And I beat the snot out of mine. good luck to ya

Mine was doing something similar. It would not shift out of first until I let off the gas. Then is would shift to 3rd. It would skip second, because second gear is non-exsistant now. I'm now waiting on my Suncoast tranny to arrive. It just came on all the sudden to, as soon as I pulled out of the driveway one day. Hopefully your problem is not so serious.

I have heard several things can cause the problem you are having.
Govenor Solenoid
Govenor Pressure Sensor
Speed Sensor

If you have someone with a good scanner, you can monitor all of the above and see what is going on.

This happened to me last week, took it to the dealer, replaced speed sensor on side on tranny, fixed problem. shifts as designed now. you can get the part at AutoZone too and do it yourself and save some $$, do a search for the posts.

AutoZone had the sensor for $15 so I gave it a whirl. That unfortunately, did not work. I'm af fixing to try the APPS reset and see what happens. Thanks, though!

OK, so far I have replaced the speed senesor on the side of the trans as well as doing the APPS reset and it's doing the same exact thing. Any ideas?

Have you checked to see if there are any codes?

Yes, I have. There are none.

My uncle's neighbor has a scanner that monitors the sensors, I'm going to bring it to him in the morning and he's going to check it out. I don't want to throw parts at it.

I would guess if you are not generating any codes at all, it would be fluid level or something like that. I had thought that, that would even generate a code, but could be wrong there. You did change the fluid and filter? Correct ATF+4 fluid?

A guy I am working with is having a similar problem but it won't shift to 2nd until he hits the redline. He changed the filter and adjusted the bands and it was ok for about 16K now it is doing it again???

In case anyone is following this. I brought it to my uncle's neighbor today and he used the scan tool on it. Everything was fine. Goveror pressure was text book perfect. I'm going to bring it Monday for him to diagnose when he has more time. I'll handle anything, but transmissions scare me.
