turbo trashed

Hi everybody this is my first post here

I logged on because I had a problem with my 02 dodge 3500 dually 4X4 24v cummins 103000 miles.

I just found the problem though. the bearings in the turbo are shot. I can wiggle the fan an 1/8" any way I want. This obviosly sucks!

The truck is totally stock. So Im thinking what do I do Now. It is a work truck- It pulls, plows, runs around, and gets used all day every day.
So what mods should I do to the truck since im already putting this money in to it. I would definately like to have more hourse and torque just like the next guy.

Great site thanks

Mike

Mike,
If you use the truck the way you say you do then I would suggest just replacing the stock holset with another new stock holset.
Or send your existing bad unit to a shop like www.htturbo.com, or www.gpopshop.com and get it rebuilt.

The stock holsets actually are quite reliable and tough despite what people say.

Is having it rebuilt going to still be of good quality. Or is it going to give me problems early on.

A rebuild by a reputable shop will be good as new.
Now of course there might be parts that actually need replaced in your turbo.... You might just end up with a new complete center section and retain the old housings.

What is your symptom/or problem??
it is normal to have play in a turbo, but the general rule of thumb is when you try to spin/turn the turbo the fins should not touch the side of the housing, and there shoud be no in or out play. the shaft play is removed by oil pressure when the engine is running.
if it helps my truck is a work truck and is driven 8hrs a day I installed an Edge EZ, (I'm sure there are other chips that are better/or worse) and it certainly actually drastically improved the drivability of the truck, it is now fun to drive as it gets up and hauls a$$ with even the lightest throttle application. my only regret was that I waited so long to install the box. I did not want huge power gains (read would then need a tranny)

What Nick said. My cousin is shop foreman at Portland Freightliner and he tells me as long as the fins don't hit the housing the turbo is OK.

If I just spin it be hand it seems ok. But I can definately put a little presure on it and get it to touch the sides. You can also see scrape marks where it hit the sides while the engine was running.

Again after this problem erupted the truck has only ran for about three minutes, so it never had the chance to totally destroy the bearings

If the fins scraped the side of the housing it needs some kind of work. Sounds like at least new bushings.

aparently the turbo is pretty bad the bill to rebuild would be 990.00
They sell a new one for 1100.00

I called cummins and they have one for 850.00 or so with the core

I'm guessing that I will probably get a new one, so heres my question.

1.should I get a re-man turbo or a new one.

2.Is there a brand that would be better or cheaper.

3. what kind and size if there is

Thanks alot guys you've been very helpful
