transmission shifting problem
Have a 98.5,24 V 1 ton. Have recently started to up grade.Installed an Edge EZ and new exhaust, plus a new exhaust manifold, also did a new lift pump due to 5 psi at idle.everything was going well untill yesterday when the auto 47RE started acting up.acts like it can't make up it's mind weather or not to shift into overdrive or stay in 3rd .Keeps up a rapid change in RPM (about 2-3.hundred) Keeps up a surge in shifting and RPM. Taking it out of overdrive does not seem to help as it seems to do the same thing between 2nd & 3rd Have an appointment on Mon. morning at a local trans shop but sure would like any input anyone might have so I could have an idea about what I may be told is wrong.Truck has 104,000 on it with no history of trans problems was last serviced at 75,000 miles with a complete flush and filter change .I tow a fairly heavy horse trailer empty weight of 7700 add 2 horses at 1000 ea plus camping gear. have pulled all over Texas and into New Mexico without any problems.
Any advice will ba appreciated

What you are experiencing is the torque convertor locking and unlocking. Most likely if you monitored this with a scan tool you would see the JTEC controller is actually commanding this from an erronious input. It can be caused by quite a few things (RFI, bad input from sensors) and I'm sure you'll get alot of different ideas on what to do. The first thing since it's cheap and easy is to CLEAN the battery terminals. After you put them on go key on and depress the throttle to wot (engine off of course) and then slowly let it back up (see APPS reset in the tech archives here). I'm really not sure if the APPS reset is a "cure all" or just a band aid, but some have reported success with it. If it still locks/unlocks after that I would go to the dealer and have them flash the JTEC controller (NOT the ecm). There is a tsb concerning this and I've had pretty good success with the flash.
THe one thing I failed to mention was that while I was looking around the lift pump area prior to changeing it, I was useing a trouble light which had a metal hook on the end of it,I must have touched something in the area around the lift pump as I got a small arc not much of one but still an arc, this was after I had installed the Edge EZ. I had disconnected the Edge while installing the lift pump and I also disconnected both batterys. Have just replaced both batteries so the terminals are clean . During my first time the trailer I thought the shifting was a bit slow especially holding in 3rd longer than it had but thought it was caused by the Edge EZ Will try your suggestion on disconnecting the batteries and then going key on w/o throttle. Can the trans shop reflash the JTEC or is this a dealer only.

Have just completed the APPS reset and things got a little better but not cured, have the system going through another check will let it sit for an hour and try again if no improvement guess I'll have to try the dealer and get them to flash the JTEC or check out the throttle position sensor.am not in a hurry to go to the trans shop as he mentioned he may have to replace a 240.00 part.
my 99 2500 is having the same problem. shifts in and out of fourth gear driving on a flat suface keeping the vehicle speed 42-45 mph. i have taken it to my local no good dodge dealer and they reflashe the computer. the truck still has the same problem. Dodge advised they have a problem with the shift computer... but they will not admit it. The dodge CERTIFIED FIVE STAR dealer said he did not know how to fix the shifting problem. The only relief seems to be cleaning the battery terminals.

If all else fails call, DTT. They will walk you through the fixes and they have a filter that is ~$35. I followed their instructions and did not have to install the filter. Took me around 2 hours under the hood.
