Auto-Transmission Shifting Problem?

1999 Dodge 2500 automatic 4x4. My auto transmission is acting up a little bit. When ever it is shifting into 4th gear it will shift fine and the RPMs drop fine. After the trans shifts maybe a second later it feels like a hard shift, but its after the trans has shifted. It only does it the final gear. It doesnt do it all the time though it usually only happens when im not accelerating past 50 mph. Is this the torque converter unlocking? Do my bands need to be adjusted? It has 99k miles on it, I bought it used with 86k on it. Those 13k miles have been put on in the past 7 months. Ive only towed with it 1 time. Any idea on what it could be?

I think a ride along is in order. Someone with experience.
But, it may the the converter cluch.
I'd suggest changing the fluid and filter if it hasn't been changed recently, as in the last 10,000 miles, as a start.

I believe the shifting should be 1-2-3-Lockup-OD. The converter lockup and OD engagement can be fairly close together. Bands should be adjusted when you change the transmission fluid and filter. Not too hard to do by yourself. Check here: https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...n&onlynewfaq=1
and here: http://www.goerend.com/torqueconvertertech.php

Make sure you have a good battery connection on both batteries and check the tranny fluid at operating temperature and while running in neutral after shifting through the gears....

Well I guess its more of a shudder than anything. I am getting ready to change the trans fluid and filter. Does Moble 1 make a synthetic oil for Auto transmissions?

Use ATF + 4 only. It is a syn oil (4) to start with.

Shifting in the 47RE can be 1-2-3-3LU-4LU. A drop of about 200 RPM indicates a LU function.

A shudder after hitting 4LU sounds like converter slipping after shift. Bad fluid can be a cause. Cooler line restriction could be problem. TConv could be ready to completelly fail also. Change as much fluid as possible.

my 99 auto 2500 had shifting problems from 1st to 2nd. change fluid, adjusted bands, no help. "Speed Sensor" on top of the Diff. fix the problem- $40 bucks. you might need to try one????

Yeah the shuttering could be the tc slipping in top gear. But our trannys have a good number of solinoids that control pressures, shift points...and more, i had problems with mine and replaced 3-4 soilinoids with no help....just get some one whop knows bout them, cost me $300+...

There's 1 solenoid and a pressure transducer.

It sounds like a valve body issue if you are getting a "hit" after the lockup shift.
