auto transmission shifting

I was riding with a friend in a 03 and found that almost everytime we would come to a complete stop the transmission didn't seem to downshift back to 1st and start over, instead it seemed to stay in drive or overdrive. Any ideas on what is going on? He said it was happening quite a bit, but hasn't recently.

THX.

Not sure what is wrong but you have a 48re trans if you have an ho motor. If you have an so motor then it is a 47re. Look on the side of motor to see what you have.

I looked in glove box. All it said there was Transmission----4 Speed Auto
Converter------Lock

I looked for a label on the side of the engine and could see none.
I had a little too much fluid in there so I drained about 1/2 liter out. I also hauled the horses to a show today (about 6500 lbs) and now the tranny is shifting like it was before. Maybe something was blocking a passage or something and the added pressure of trailering moved it. Maybe too much fluid had something to do with it????? That fluid was only in there for about 5 weeks. Anyway, fluid looks dark, but not burnt, so I will change fluid and filter tomorrow. Any comments.
