A friend of mine has a 2000 automatic 4x4 cummins and she told me a that her truck seems to be searching for gear when going real slow....like 5mph. What could this be? She says it is like it is in gear then out then in then out. That how she explained it to me.

 

Sounds like an apps problem. Search apps and you'll find the procedure to clean it up.

 

We have already reset the apps a few times. Seemed to fix all problems when I changed the filter and fluid and set the bands. Then it acted up again, so changed it again. The tranny was plugged up pretty good first time with debri so it made sence that it would need it a couple of times to clean it out. But i hate to have to do it again. I feel something else is going on.

 

If you have 'debris' clogging up the filter, you have a problem.
You might be looking at tranny clutch friction material that's supposed to be coating the clutch surfaces, not clogging the filter.

 

There is a bulletin on upgrading the solenoid and transducer in tranny for this issue. Not sure this is a fix all,though. Throttle cable adjustment is also very critical on this issue. This 5 mph constant speed is a very small part of driving. Most people drive through and never notice. Pull shifter into low if gonna run at this speed forever.

 

after it did the surging thing looking for gear at that low speed It also didn't want to shift out of third gear twice. I had to let off the pedal a little and it still didn't shift, then when gave it some more go pedal it shifted.

 

Mine got stuck in 2nd and it was the speed sensor. Easy fix for about $20

 

well, turns out tranny is shot.

 

After takin it to a good from what we hear tranny guy, turns out it had a bad sillynoid in it. He went over the whole thing, replaced the noid and i don't know what else. Said it was in great shape. $400. lucky her, all though we were both kinda lookin forward to upgraded torque converter and valve body.
