trans ?
I get a shudder when the transmission shifts from 2nd to drive and drive to overdrive, and sometimes under low to mild acceleration while in overdrive. If I floor it, seems to be fine. Is this the torque converter locking and un locking? Can I unplug a electrical connection to the trans, to troubleshoot?

yes. outside fuse box. take out transmission relay put trans in 1st manuel shift to 2nd then 3rd. you have to go to neutral to start over or you will stay in third if it shifts ok then it is in electrical system. sounds like front band needs adjusted or is going bad.

I changed the fluid and adjusted the bands. it shifts better, and seems to have cleared up all hesitations that the trans had before, but converter still has trouble locking in
I'm not sure what year your truck is, but the early 2nd gen trucks sometimes had problems with electrical "noise" interfering with the lock-out circuit. I bought a small resistor (I think it is a resistor, I'm no electrician and it was 8 years ago!) from DTT that I spliced into the appropriate wire, and no more problems. This was a problem of the transmission locking and unlocking frequently at about 40-50 mph. (If you watch the tach, the RPM's would increase 2-300 every 10 seconds or so.) Hope that this helps!

Sorry it took so long to get back but I've been out of town for two weeks. I would call DTT, which is where I got the resistor. It came with directions on how and where to install. I'm not a terrific mechanic, and I was able to do this in about 20 minutes. Good Luck! (DTT is Diesel Transmission Technology in Canada. Bill K is the 'Mr. Wizard' of diesel transmissions.)
