Swap questions and problems?

My block has a gnarly crack in it,just below the oil filter,I've got no idea how it got cracked, but the engines' broke now,I'm wondering.
1.Will any 24valve engine work,or do I need to get one in a certain year?
2.what do i need to look out for, cause' the last thing I need is to spend any more money than is nessasary, because of course I'm totaly strapped and could not imagine a worse time for this to happen.
3.Max HP is not my concern, need this one to last, thought I would get at least 500k out of my last one,but not to be

Anyways, sniveling aside....I'd sure appricate anything you all have to say, even if your just thinking out loud, cause I've gotta get this puppy up and roaring again soon!
Thanks guys/gals
Brian

I would look for another '01 short block if i was in your position, if all your pumps and such are in bad shape.. spring for a long block.. i suppose you could always "move up" to a CR engine but then you need a CR ecu and such

Any 98.5 to 02 block should work for you, but use all your wiring, sensors, and IP Your truck is an HO with that NV5600 correct?

Even though its a 01, that might be one of the 53 blocks that are known for cracking and leaking there. Look under the block for a big ol 53. Contact Cummins first.

Yes sir,it is the "HO" engine,I was eyeballing a 02' engine, thinking it might work,so I'm glad you let me know that would be a possibility.
And the VP-44 is HO also, although I'd heared that I did not have to use a HO pump, put a HO back on it anyway.
Thanks

Have allready freaked out about that, fearing it was a 53,but I'd looked before, and could not find the 53 on the block,so I think at this point I'm just lucky (NOT)and got one of the rare blocks that had some casting flaw,I'll post for sure about what happened, after I get it torn down.
Thanks.

Well still call your local cummins shop. I've heard of them replacing faulty blocks. Too expensive and time consuming of a project not to explore this option.

Got another quick question, where can a guy find a cheap/good guage cluster, pillar mount is fine.
I've found a 2000 ram,with the "HO" and a 6 speed,so I'm not sure if my edge off an 01 will work,I'm guessing no,and I need to have gauges.
