22.5" vs 3.42 swap vs new G56 swap

Any thoughts on which is the most cost effective way to reduce RPMS and get a net mileage gain on an '06 SRW mega?

there has been some serious discussion on this in the engine and drivetrain forum

My thoughts are unless you want your kidneys beat in dont get 22.5s besides you can get darn near as tall for 17s

The 342 sounds the most econmical at about 700 for the parts but no one has chimed in with any updates

The tranny swap sounds the most intriguing but not enough info isd out in the open yet on cost etc or if one could or should just change out the final od gear or do that in conjunction with the 342 swap.

I keep leaning towrds the gear swap and I already have 35s but definately would not mind stepping down a size in tires.

I think the 22.5" would ride rougher, but would give you the longevity in tires. The unfortunate thing is you are sacrficing so much in weight......180# vs maybe 90# with a 315 tire on a 17". The 22.5" would alleviate the cost in a gear swap or tranny swap though....hmmmmm????

I have the 35s already and It is not enough

I would get 22.5s out of my head because you still cant squeeze any taller tire than a35 anyway no matter what the rim size is

so I will do one you do the other

I think the most cost effective way to reduce your rpms is with a gearvenders overdrive. You would have about 500 rpm drop. Or possibly change 6th gear itself in your old tranny.
I couldn't be happier with my 22.5's on 37's For me the truck is now geared perfect

ok good points ram rodd lets talk dollars and cents how much you got in your wheels and tires and on top of that they cant ride all that good.

second the GV unit is like 2500 bucks plus install not to mention the service frequency it calls for.

I agree the 6th gear change sounds like a viable option but whats it going to cost?

If you do the work yourself the gear swap is under a grand and 100 bucks or so of that is gone anyway when yo uconsider you probably need new diff fluid service anyway at least I do

$4000-6000 for 22.5's.........add 500 lbs. rotating mass and 150K miles wear
$2500 for aux. overdrive.............get extra gears
$1500-$2000 for 3.42's installed.......only a 9% change
$? to swap G56 6th gear out.........only 9% change

Out of all these, the 22.5's are the only option that WILL pay for itself in time with lower RPMs and insane tire life. Especially if you are going to buy bigger tires anyway.

I bet the aux. overdrive needs to be rebuilt before it's paid for itself. I have replaced way too many of these behind gas big blocks with low miles. US and Gear Vendor.

I got 6 new aluminum rims at my door for $1200 And a good friend of mine owns a tire store so I got a good deal on the tires.
The ride is very good I have 50psi iin the front and the same in the back. On gravel roads the ride is much smoother with the 22.5 only thing I would have done different is put Michilens tires on instead of the SUMOTOMO. The Sumos are good road manors but they catch a lot of rocks on the gravel.
I read on this site that the 3.42 gears wont fit the housing on out trucks. The 08's are a little different. I have no Idea if this is true but I would find out before ordering gears!!

regarding the 3.42s when I called on them the ring gear for the front required a spacer from one outfit but the other made no mention so I believe the proper sets are out there just not wildly available yet the one that required a spacer was intended fr a gm product
