Starting Issues

It's happened a couple times, but now happens every time I try to use my truck. I hop in, turn off the engine and all it does is *chug chug chug die* and occasionally I can get it to finally fire, and when it does, there are no performance issues. No drivability issues, no check engine lights. Acts like nothing has happened. The Dodge Dealership is pretty dead set on it being the pressure sensor since it reads 8 PSI at idle. Which makes sense, but at the same time I'm confused. It's currently 65 degrees outside and still has the same issue. Any thoughts? I have yet to find a video that illustrates my issue. Please help!! I don't wanna dump money into parts I might not need!!

oh my bad. It's a 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 she has been beefed up but I bought it that way, so not sure what's all done to it, but I've had it for over a year and a half and haven't had problems till the last couple of months

If your do not have a fuel pressure gauge installed, I'd highly recommend one. With a 99, I'd bet on a lift pump failure. This in turn, can cause an injection pump failure.

My experience is with the mechanical 98's on down, but stand by. Lot's of experience here. Stand by for more input.....

i replaced the lift pump last July sometime. I put an Airdog 150 on it. And if it is, why would I still be able to get it to fire up with no problems sometime? I can hear the lift pump running. Sounds just like the day I bought it

Intermittent no start is what my VP44 did just before it quit starting completely. Troubleshoot during that time was impossible.

There is no "pressure sensor" so I'm not sure what Dodge is talking about.....

If the truck has ANY modifications then it better have a fuel pressure gauge. If not then that should be high on your "to do" list.

Other than that, its impossible to fully understand whats happening without knowing fuel pressure and if there's any codes in the OBD system. So if you still have the OEM fuel pressure test ports then go rent a fuel pressure test gauge from your local parts store. They should have them. But if you dont have the test ports anymore as whomever installed the Airdog removed them, then you're in a pickle since there's no way to check without plumbing in a test port or in cab gauge.

Secondly, you'll need a OBD scanner to check for codes since the '99 doesnt read them through the odometer by cycling the ignition key.

On the 99 it depends on what type of odometer he has. If it has the tan background with black digits (LCD display), then there's no chance of pulling codes there. However, if his has the black background with lit green digits (VFD display), then it may work.

Definitely need fuel pressure readings. It is critical information knowing what the lift pump is doing. You could either have a fuel starvation issue from an inop lift pump or a bigger problem with the VP44.
