Replacement Lift Pump Questions

Howdy,

I think that I am going to go ahead and replace the lift pump on my 2002 before anything bad happens. I've got 60K miles on the factory pump and maybe I should start worrying about it. The F.A.S.S. seems like the best choice, but I wonder if it's overkill considering that the most I am ever going to do to this truck is some moderate injectors once the warranty expires. On the other hand, the Bully Dog unit is over $300, so it's not cheap either.

My specific questions are:

What unit does everyone recommend?

Can the F.A.S.S. be (easily) run through the existing filter for fuel heating?

On the Diesel Specialists website, the description of the Bully Dog pump states "Don`t be concerned about hard starts due to high fuel pressure; the BD kit includes a proprietary switch that solves the hard start issues common with other lift pump kits." I have never heard about hard starting with improved lift pumps. Is this something I need to be concerned about if I get the F.A.S.S.?

How long do the filters on F.A.S.S. last?

Thanks,
Tad

My understanding is that "hard starting' occurrs after increasing input pressure with a better lp because your vp44 diaphram is already beginning to go to hell and not used to enough pressure. This is not the fault of the new pump, but I did read somewhere that you don't want too much pressure from your lift pump, just adequete volume. Hard starting is not supposed to occur as long as the vp44 diaphram is still ok.

I imagine someone on this site knows a little more about the specifics on this that I do.

Get a fuel pressure guage. All diesel fuel "contamination" levels are different. You want to be able to monitor the fuel pressure after the filter so you know when to replace it.

depends where you get your fuel.If you get water and dirt in your fuel a lot than the filters won't last long about the same principle as the stock filter like he mentioned keep one eye on your FP gauge.

First off get a gauge and only replace the l/p once you know you need to. If you find once you have a gauge that the l/p cant keep up then look at your options. Yor hard starting issues only come up if you dont use the stock l/p trigger. When you key up the ignition the l/p runs for a few seconds then quits so it starts against no pressure then once the key goes back to run the PCM tells the l/p to run again. They all pretty much use the factory trigger so dont be concerned with BDs claim. As to your filter ? its something that depends on the fuel you get. Ones a warer seperator you just drain and the other you change when you need to.

In your neck of the woods.

TXTad,
Sorry I can't answer your FASS question. Thought I'd say hello. I just keep replacing my LP, on my 3rd one. 220K+ miles, original VP, FP gauge -post filter. I change the fuel filter every 12K. All stock, been a great truck. I will look out for you in FM. If you see an dirty Intense Blue with a white topper, flag me down.

Later,
Jeff
