putting a manual in a auto truck...

Has anyone heard of putting a manual tranny in an auto truck? I would like to put a manual in my 01 2500.....can anyone tell me exactly what all i would need? and if it has to be an 01 donor truck or can other years work also???

i know it might sound crazy..and it may be....but it just crossed my mind..considering i have had it for a while...know its condition and have it payed off...but will be needing a new tranny in the future....id just much rather have a manual...

Sounds like an awful lot of work. You'll need a transmission and possibly a transfer case if it's 4WD, Drive line(s) may have to be changed plus you'll need all of the clutch pedal parts and possibly have to change out the console on the hump to accommodate the shifter.

i was figuring on the transmission itself..which shouldnt be too bad if i have to get a new one anyways....the pedel assembly, cut a hole in the floor, and get a shifter......possibly drive shafts....i figured most of it i could come across at a decent price at a salvage yard....but i didnt know what other little things i might not be thinking of...and assumed surely there was someone out there that has done this or knew of someone that has...???

iv known a few to do this in half ton chevy trucks and a few other things...so i know its possible..... iv converted longbed trucks to shortbeds before...i just havent known anyone to do this specific truck and was hoping someone would have the info for me...thanks again...

the 5 speed would be simple to find, about $1000 to $1500 + core around $300 for that . If you want a 6 speed look to spend $2500 to $3000 for it. I would get a sbc clutch it will come with a flywheel. Like stated trans. case and driveshafts. All the rest of the stuff should be easy to find. I would say a 1/2 ton 2nd gen. would work as well for that.

Sounds like a good post for the classifieds since a lot of the standard guys want an auto for racing, etc... even up trade parts for parts...they would have to build your auto for racing anyway.

I didn't say the tranny is the same. I don't know if the 1/2 ton has a nv4500 or not. If I had to guess I would say NOT, But I would think the pedels are the same
