Question Oil Pan Gasket Replacement

Has anyone ever replaced an oil pan gasket "without" pulling the engine? If so, please tell me how it went.
This is on a 2001, 3/4 ton, 4X4, 6 speed.

Never done it, but I beleive you can do it without pulling the engine. You'll just have to disconnect the mounts and lift the engine. You'll probably have to take the valvecover off to get some clearance.

You don't have to remove the valve cover, you need to lift the engine about 2 inches.

Remove valve cover, remove fan shroud, remove engine mounting bolts, hoist engine up.... that's the way it has been said many times, but the book way is to drop the transmission and transfer case and then the pan will just slide down out of the way.

I think it comes down to personal preference. I would probably do it by the book, but others have chosen the easier(relative word here) way.

Leave the valve cover alone, but I pull the fan so that it doesn't break the shroud. Personally I wouldn't do this job on the ground, but I'm sure many have. Just use the right tools to support/lift the engine.

Thanks guys. I think I'll just pull the trans and transfer case. I've had them out before changing the cultch, wasn't as bad as it looks. I can do that in my own garage, but don't have the room or the hoist to lift the engine, and then I won't have to find a place to do it.

I think you have to drop the pan down then reach in and unbolt the pickup tube before you can get the pan out.

You would replace the pan gasket because it leaks. So a little tip, while the pan is out, look closely at the pan flange where it does the 90 degree bend. They like to crack and you end up fixing and fixing and still leaking. I had to replace the pan.

I did it on my 94 5 speed.

I removed #6 valve cover, disconected the turbo outlet clamp as well as the boot on the intake horn. I took the 4 fan bolts off and slid the fan back on the shaft to clear the housing. Then loosed off the two engine mounting bolts. I used a lift to pull the engine up. It has to go a long way up to get the pan to clear the adaptor plate and cross member. Scrape old gasket off block and pan used gray RVT on the new gasket.

It took 8 hours in my garage at -10*c. It still leaks oil but not from the pan.
