oil pan gasket
How many of you have replaced your pan gasket? Per the TSB, you are supposed to put silicone on the back half. Anyway, I have now ruined two of them trying to torque to the spec'd 18 ft lbs. In all actaulity the gaskets squished out long before 18 ft lbs. I put the copper gasket sealer on both sides in addition to the silicone on the rear end. What am I doing wrong?

i have never had any luck torquing gaskets with silicone on them, they always seem to squish out like that. you might try indian head gasket sealer by permatex. it seems less prone to that problem

Won't have near the tendency to do that. You also don't need to smear a ton of silicone on the gasket.

I wont use silicon on any engine or trans. Not even in a pinch. Done too many repairs over the years from people using too much. squeezing out just as much on the inside as out and getting where it shouldn't be.
Stuff should be banned......wait..... it's money in my pocket x that.
just use a good thin film of aviation form-a-gasket or my pref is CAT red gasket compound.
Just a real light coat. yer not making a gasket just filling in any minor flaws the gasket sits against.
