oil change ??s
prolly been discussed hudreds of times already, but im new to the site today.......
1- what mileage should oil be changed-not using any aftermarket prefilters, synthetics, etc. i've heard 3000-7500...???
2- what is a good quality oil? i currently use delo400.....and is it detrimental (sp?) to switch types/brands when changing oils?
you know, take it to a shop and they put in their brand, next change a different shop uses a different brand of oil???
thanks for any advice

I change mine every 5000, fuel every 10. I also use Rotella 15w40. Delo is a good oil too. The brand of oil is not nearly as important as using a good quality filter though. Someone has a list of filter brands approved for use on the CTD, but I forget where it is. CUmmins recomends Fleetguard filters, and you'll find they are what most of the people here use too. They are easy to get at your local Cummins dealer, or order them online from Geno's. Whatever you do, don't go to the dealer for an oil filter or fuel filter. They charge waaaay too much.
As for switching brands of oil, well, I have *heard* that it is best to stick with one brand. My truck has had Rotella for every oil change I've done. For me, its brand loyalty. I can't imagine it would hurt if you had to use something else. Its sort of like smoking, smokers stick to one brand, but if your favorite quickie mart is out, you get something close. You're not as happy, but you still get your "fix".
Oh, I would also avoid the quickie-lube joints. I briefly worked in one of those places, and I can say from experience, most of those people have no clue what they're doing. Yeah, sometimes you find a place you can trust, but they're few and far between. They also don't use Cummins approved filters.

Welcome aboard Snowrodeo! You're right, hundreds of times in some form. Here is one thread. https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...threadid=39842
Perform a search (using the search button at the top) use the terms; oil +syn +dino and you will get an idea of how often and what brand, and what base, synthetic or dinosaur. Nat
At the risk of sounding like a laxative commercial, keep it regular,
stick with the same shop. You don't want to get caught up in a competition between shops if you hire your service work. Nat

3 to 5 k is too short and is a waste of perfectly good oil unless you do mostly short trips or the truck spends most of its time idling, or if the truck is seriously overfueled. 7.5 to 15 k is more reasonable for normal use. The more light load highway driving you do, the longer you can run the oil.
Delo 400 is a good oil, but there's nothing wrong with changing brands if you happen across a sweet deal. Rotella is very popular on this site, I prefer Delvac or Delo because they don't stink after you change the oil. There really isn't a "bad" oil on the market provided it's a major brand and meets CI-4 specs. They will all do the job just fine.

Cummins / Dodge both say no more than 7,500 miles!
Mine turns black about 5,000 and gets changed at 6,000. This is mostly highway miles but there is a bit of off roading involved. In Idaho we have more dirt roads than paved road!
Currently using Mopar filters & Phillips 66 15W-40 (5 Gal barrels)
I'm personally not seen any improvement in Syn. Oil's (Approx 0.5 -0.8 MPG) personally not worth the price. Also the syn. oil
gets dirty just like the dino juice! Just my opinion...
As for filters I'm moving over to fleetguard next they are cheaper!

5-10-20 here, (oil and filter, fuel filter, air fiter). I am running the Exxon XD3 Elite, which is a synthetic blend, but will be changing to the Valvoline premium blue when this case of XD3 is done. I use fleetgaurd filters.
Trending Topics
5K oil and filter change, 10K fuel filter change, Fleetguard filters and Valvoline Blue Extreme 5-40 oil are my personal preferences.
I especially like the 5-40 synthetic oil because of my cold Minnesota winters.
Nothing wrong with changing oil brands, but I wouldn't make a regular habit of it. Find what works for you and stick to it.
