NV5600 Routine Maintanence Advice

As some know, I will be pulling my tranny and xfer case this week to install the SB clutch. I plan on changing the fluid to AMSOIL in both and installing my Attutude oil temp sensor in the PTO cover. Are there any other things that I should do while I have them out? Throw-out bearing? Pilot bearing (are they the same thing)? Any other advice or things I can change for small $$s that would save jerking the tranny in the future? I know Jack about trannys.....that is the only thing I know for sure! My truck has 85,000 miles and the tranny has been cracked once to put a new syncronizer on the reverse gear at 30,000 miles. I'm sure there is going to be junk on the magnet after seeing the complete detonation of the syncronizer!!!

Thanks, JWB

I would definatly change the throwout and pilot bearings...but they should come with your clutch kit

Other than that, make sure to put a little grease on the pivot points on the clutch fork...you'll know what I mean when you take it apart

Good luck...I'm sure someone else will chime in with more advice, but it sounds to me like you have the basics covered!

I would recommend not using AMSOIL

I am an Amsoil dealer and have Amsoil in the rest of the truck, but when I put the MTF in my truck, it shifted great for a few thousand miles then shifted terrible. I had to change the fluid. Changed to Redline MTL and was better again and then didn't shift well again after a few k(but not as bad as the MTF). Now I am back to the factory fill because of it.

Might try Torco next time.

Ever since I had my clutch put in, it has not shifted as smoothly. Not sure why?

Anyone else?

Anyone else had problems with Amsoil? I did a search read a bunch of post on Redline and Amsoil and figured either was better than factory. Like I said, I know little about trannys, but I sure would like this thing to shift easier.

I've got some sitting here, but haven't put it in yet...my tranny only has 15K on it, so it's not really ready yet. I wann put 30K on it before I drop the oil!

I think Tranny's are sensitive mechanisms. The factory Lube is synthetic. Properties can vary from one blend to the next.
I would stick with the factory, especially if warranty is an issue.
I think the book does not call for any service to the tranny, other than check the level, check for leaks.
I would think it should be changed anyway, for GP, at 100k. Any other thoughts here???
I put the Royal Purple in the Dana 80, as recommeded by the book. Many people seemed to do well with that, especially with the limited slip & it's issues.
Good Luck!!

I'm of the kind that thinks, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." But, if I'm gonna tear it apart, no better time than the present to do some "preventative maintenance", eh?

No problems with the Amsoil MCF here, although after a couple thousand miles I noticed it shifted a lot smoother after the new fluid wore in. In cold weather the amsoil shifted a lot better than the factory penzoil.

Cool. I ordered my Amsoil yesterday afternoon from their company website and I'll be danged if it isn't out for delivery today. That is service! It also helps that I am only 2 hours from Wichita KS too!

I believe the factory fill is Texaco. DC or Texaco is all that is permitted under warranty, from what I understand.

My 6 speed was installed back in 2000 with about 120k on the odometer. I have around 340k now and I have checked the fluid less than 10 times by letting the fluid weep thru the threads on the plug because I added 2 extra qts from the top and some Lucas. Factory lube is the only way to go I think. I have never had any shifting problems.

I've run Redline MTL and it's great for about 20,000 miles then it goes for a dump. Change it out and it's fine again for 20,000.

I'm running Amsoil MTF right now, have about 20,000 on it and it still shifts fine. The only odd thing I have done is I run a full 6 quarts, filled from the top. I've talked to many rebuilders and seen a few 5600's opened up laying on the floor and everyone says that the factory fill level is not enough. I went with the full 6 quarts and it doesn't shift any better or worse then a normal fill, but at least I know everything is getting lubed.

You can't get 5600's anymore and parts are very scarce, so in my book, oil is way cheaper than a transmission. I'll dump it and refill as much as I have to.

Well......

I jerked the old brute last night and OH MY GOD that thing is HEAVY! Also seems that the Port-a-power my father brought me was a turd and wouldn't do anything but leak oil all over the floor so I figured out a way to use a large crow bar and a block of wood to pop the crossmember out. I sure am glad I went to college and don't do this for a living. I'd die after about three days. Don't get me wrong, I like to work hard, but this is for the birds! My clutch should be in this morning and I'll pick up my flywheel at the machinists after work. Sounds like daddy is gonna have fun putting this beast back in tonight! I sure hope this Amsoil works for more than 10K or 20K like some of you say it won't. That would severly wiss me off to have to crawl under my truck again. I've had enough of that after one night!

Yip. "Suck" is the key word here. I just unboxed my South Bend Clutch. Now I get to sit at me desk all day long and look at it until I can go home and actually put it in.
