Workout routine (I know you can help Scotty)
Alright. I got a BUNCH of free time on my hands right now so I thought I'd take up weight lifting to kill some time. I know absolutely nothing about routines or sets or what I should do. I'm not looking to be a body builder, but I would like to put on some muscle and tone everything out. Any hints or suggestions yall can give me to achieve my goals. I know a better diet is on the way (pizza and beer is my diet as of now) so any tips on that will be appreciated to. Thanks a lot for yall's help.
I'm no expert, but I've done some myself...I won't give you any kinda routine deal...there are hundreds of different ways you can reach the same goal. My only advice is, the first month is the hardest by far! You'll wake up in the morning w/ sore muscles asking yourself why you're putting yourself through this torture. It takes about a month for your muscles to get used to the routine. After that you'll feel like it's a part of your life. And stick to your workout plan no matter what! The first day you skip a workout it'll spoil you and that's when you'll stop going to the gym so often and eventually you'll quit.
Or, if you have more will power than I, you'll just get after it!

I know what you mean by skipping one workout routine. I used to have a fairly decent one, but I skipped one day, and I quit. I like sore muscles. Let's me know I actually used them for something else besides lifting the TV controller or a beer.
Goldenears, what type of pizza/beer do you want?

Blue, body composition, bone structure as well as metabolism and your own goals are what will dictate what you can do and where you can go.
The first time I went to the gym over 20 yrs ago I was hooked and I just wanted to lift heavier and heavier.
I was too heavy and out of shape when I started so I was probably at the other end of the spectrum than you are now.
As I kept training I noticed I was leaning out and I dropped a few pounds and then I started to gain more muscle as I increased my weights. I competed in a deadlift comp three yrs after I started and lifted 726lbs! From then on I knew strength was the rush for me over a ripped physique.
I continued to train and try out routines and then competed in armwrestling at the national level...took 2nd place in 91 in the superheavyweight class.
I always toss out the regular routine for different stuff and after powerlifting for several years I crossed over to strongman...and stayed there. One mistake I made was I neglected my core strength in the gym for more event training and I paid for it with a loss of secondary muscle strength in several lifts/motions.
I am currently working out a new training routine with a 100% gym program for at least 6 months, then add the event training again but stay with the gym at least 50% of the time.
Diet is critical the older you get...not so much how much you eat...what you eat. I prefer a lot of protein with moderate carbs.
I watch the sugars/salts and fats but I do not sweat it too hard...just make sure its not a nasty habit of putting too much of any of those three in your body too often in high amounts.
I try to get 4 liters of water in everyday too.
If you get to a gym, someone there will probably be more then glad to help you out.
Hope this helps.
