New Injector Pump

I have a 2001 ctd with 30,000 miles on it. I have had problems with lack of power (on occasion) since it was new. The dealer always told me they couldn't detect the same problems when ever I would take it to them so they wouldn't do anything. After reading some posts on this forum I just took it back this last week and told them I wanted them to check it out again. They did finally check some pressures after I requested it and just called me back to say they will be putting in a new injector pump. I asked about the lift pump and they didn't really tell me anything. Do I need to make sure they change the lift pump or can the lift pump be OK and the injector pump be bad? Is there anything else I should ask about when I pick up the pickup? I am really glad to have found this forum. If it wasn't for all of you I would still be driving around with a bad injector pump. Thanks alot.

Re:New Injector Pump

Yes the lift pump could still be good but 99% of the time its the bad lift pump that takes out the injection pump. I would get a gauge and check the pressure after they are done.

Re:New Injector Pump

I would seriously beg them to confirm the lift is OK and have them replace it if its not. Otherwise I would buy one from Cummins and ask that they install it for you. I couldn't imagine installing a new VP not fully knowing the lift is OK. Why have a new injector pump that starts out life being starved from the get go. If you have to, I'd pay myself just for peace of mind. Dont assume its fine because they "think" it is.

Re:New Injector Pump

Just got the pickup back today. When I asked if the lift pump was OK they said yes the checked it and it was OK. Then I asked what the pressure readings were and he didn't have an answer for me. He just changed the subject. He said the reason they replaced the injector pump was because the computer showed it was malfunctioning. I don't know what to think. I better just go get myself a gauge and install so I can see what is going on with the lift pump.

Re:New Injector Pump

Pack....Make sure the lift pump is checked, and should be changed. I have never heard of an injection pump failure and not have a bad lift pump! ( however, anything is possible?). As Chuck3 mentioned, 99.9% of injection pump failures are a result of failed lift pumps! Depending how many miles you have on the truck, the next injection pump $1500-1800, plus $130, plus labor will be on YOU!.<br><br>Steve :'(<br><br>P.S. Install a mechanical fuel pressure gauage ASAP!

Re:New Injector Pump

Just took my 2001 with 31,000 miles in for similar symptoms. The lift pump was replaced under warranty, however, on the way home from the dealer the injection pump failed. As soon as they replace the injection pump I'll put in an aftermarket lift pump!

Re:New Injector Pump

That sucks man. I hopefully caught mine soon enough. If not, then the injection pump is on me. :'(

Re:New Injector Pump

Cummins told me this week that they can supply me an injector pump around $500 exchange. Of course not installed. Eased my fear somewhat.

Re:New Injector Pump

I must've ran around for 10,000 miles with a bad lift pump.... VP still going strong (looking for some wood to knock on..). Replacing an injector pump doesnt look that difficult.. Prolly easier than my old 6.2 chebbie..

Re:New Injector Pump

The injection pump can go bad ,with a good lift pump. I've replaced several were the lift pump press was 13-15 idle, 9-11 wot. In them cases the inside pressure rings were wore so the pump wasn't suppling press to injectors.
