Messy Breather Hose...

OK, there's got to be a better way than letting oil blow all over the front of the engine and clog the radiator! And I'm not to good with the idea of extending the hose and letting oil drip onto the road (I do alot of off roading with this truck and prefer not to contaminate the trails). Anyone have a solution?

Check out mopar1973man's gallery. He used pvc to rerout the breather tube. It seems to cut down on the amount of oil ejected out the tube also. I run this set up and I love it.

I moved mine, see my picts. Moparmans works, but as I've mentioned before, I'm not to crazy about the "looks" of the project.

I re-routed my hose as well. I also hung on to the old bottle. My hose ends at the tranny crossmember where the bottle is attached. I didn't like the idea of driping oil everywhere either. Check out my gallery for pics.

Ok... I guess it time for to jump in here..

First off the stock breather everyone is just normally adding hose and extending downward. But some of us use our truck off-road and were getting spillage. Mine was pretty bad. I would loose 2-3 quarts of oil on steep grades and the front of the truck was a mess.

So I figured out a solution to the problem that keeps the tube highier than the engine!

Mounted on the truck

Exit Point Under The Truck

This system won't... Plug, Freeze, Collapse, Etc. No maintence and no drips on my floor either. It cost about 7 bucks to build...

I am the un-educated one here so go slow with me. I would like to do this because I am starting to get a pretty good amount of oil out here. But a few of my questions are, If this is designed to drain off overflow and it can't due to re-design what are the consequinces here? My next question is, why am I all the sudden gettin all this overflow, what is the cause of it?

It not actually a overflow it a crankcase vent. It was relocated on the front of the engine for the 2nd Gens. but Like I found out that if your offroading and point the nose downhill to steep it will run out of the vent. The tube is design to keep the vent tube highier that the engine on steep downhill runs. Don't get me wrong but mine still drools out the end while run down the road. The oil can be see on the bell housing in the one pic above. But this design will relocate the oil / vapor away from the cowling vent and you won't smell that heavy oil smell any longer in the cab. Will not plug up the radiator. The tube is short enough that it stays warm (won't freeze). There is a certain amount of water vapor that comes out of the vent too... So some of these guys with long rubber hoses might have a freeze up. This will cause the pressure build up in the crankcase and push oil out of crank seals Etc. (not good!)

So far Dodge Dealers have seen my design. I've gotten good comment about the tube location and the materials used. This design according to my dealer WILL NOT VOID your warranty!

Have you changed your oil and filter lately? what kind did you use?

Take a sample of oil from the dipstick on your finger. Does the oil smell of diesel fuel? Is it really thin? Might have fuel getting into the crankcase...

Usually the blow by is cause by ring wear...

Hey Mopar, thanks for the info. I had a bad Injector supply tube that was leaking fuel into the oil for a while but I have had that fixed for a couple thousand now. I change oil every 3000 in this truck regardless. It gets used pretty hard, lot of heavy towing in dusty places and idling. I just assumed worn rings were my problem but the overflow is totally at random. I don't know what it does while I'm driving but when I park it sometimes there is not a drop after hours and other times it will leave a six inch ring in the same amount of time. Can't find any patterns to it.

Heavy braking will cause it to spill over too... I found this out trying to stop from hitting a deer in the highway... Never the less I still hit the deer and put a dent in the bumper. But the radiator and hood were coated with engine oil... Boy it left about 1-2 quarts on the ground! This was with the old breather setup...

You have to dump the breather bottle pretty often sometimes to keep it from happening. Once it full it will spill... One good reason to get rid of the bottle.

I was one of those that never had a bottle from the factory. Guess I'l have to give this a shot, tired of the oil spots in the driveway. Thanks

Heres a thread by member J BODY, he's a Dodge mechanic. This thread has pictures of what happens to a radiator with the "puke bottle" not moved.

That there is only from the oil vapors that the bottle emit.

Wait till you have a good spill from off-roading... Boy you want to talk about a huge mess! Think of the fan slinging engine oil everywhere under the hood! It took me over 2 hours and a gallon of simple green to clean the oil off of everything!

I'm glad I don't worry about that any more!

How much oil do you put in at change time? I see most people put in 3 gallons. That is a little much and will cause the oil spill to a little more excessive. I put in 2 3/4 gallons and it is just right, and do not have hardly any blow-by/spillage.
